There are tons of companies creating tools and applications to help people to be more productive and get more things done and Google is definitely one of them. In the recent years, Google had created applications such as iGoogle, Google Reader, Google Doc and when these applications are used in the right way, it can help us to improve our productivity. Let’s take a look at some of them.

Google Reader

Google Reader is one of the most popular RSS reader on the web and people use this to collect feeds (articles from blogs or news) which they can browse through it later.

Why use Google Reader?

We used to bookmark everything in our browser and digging out the sites that we had bookmarked isn’t really an easy task to do when we had bookmarked tons of sites. With Google Reader, you can subscribe to multiple blogs or news that you would like to read and everything will just appear in your Google Reader. You can then browse all the blogs or news that you would like to read in a single place without fumbling through all the sites to look for articles that you would like to read.

  • Lesser time spent on searching for articles.
  • Articles are well organized for reading.
  • Able to scan through lots of articles using minimal time which is  not possible if using traditional methods of finding news.

Google Calendar

Google calendar is an online calendar that you can use as a daily planner or to remind you of any upcoming events that you had entered.(e.g. Birthdays, meetings)

Why use Google Calendar?

For people on the go, creating events in Google Calendar works better than writing it down in physical calendars because you can have easy access to it whenever you want. Whenever you enter any events into Google Calendar, you can set it to remind you with an email at any time you want. This will ensure that you will not miss out any appointments.

If you are running a business and you need to let your employee to know about your schedule, you can also share your Google Calendar with them so that they will know when you are available by accessing the calendar using the internet.

  • Help you to stay organized.
  • No more worrying about forgetting your wedding anniversary or missing an appointment.
  • Others do not need to ask you frequently about your schedule as they can see it in Google Calendar.

Google Alerts

Google Alerts is an application that will email you the latest relevant Google results that you queried.

Why use Google Alerts?

Have you found yourself scouring over the internet to help keep tab on your industry, competitions or on a developing news? You can do yourself a favor and free up some time by creating a Google Alert by entering a search term that you are interested in and have it deliver to your email daily, weekly or as it happen.

  • Save up precious time by having information delivered to you instead of you searching for it.
  • Able to get more things done(more intake of necessary information) by doing less.(no researching on your part, Google does it for you and will deliver it to your email.)

Google Doc

Google Doc consist of applications such a word processor, spreadsheet, presentation and form application which you can use it to create or edit documents online while collaborating with others in real-time.

Why use Google Doc?

First of all, you do not need to pay to use Google Doc and it is really useful when you are doing a project or running a business where you need to have everyone on the team to work on the project. Being able to collaborate in real time on the net means that you do not need to meet your team physically to get things done and the project can be done in the comfort of your own home.

  • Save up on travelling time.
  • Save cost.
  • Flexible timing to do your work as you are able to do work with your team without the need to meet them.

iGoogle is your personalized Google page which you can add applications such as to-do list, Google Calendar, news or any fun stuff you can find on the gadget list provided by Google.

Why use iGoogle

I had recently started to use iGoogle and I love every second of it. I had added sticky notes, to-do list, news and a countdown timer to it and the applications do help me to increase my productivity. My Google Calendar on iGoogle help to keep me organized and I have and my to-do list ensures that I am getting things done too. The count down timer is one of my favourite application as it helps me to have a sense of urgency to get things done on time.

Here are some screen captures of my iGoogle.

The application in the middle churns out multiple inspirational quotes in a day.

I had integrated my RSS reader into my iGoogle page too which make everything easily accessible to me.

  • Easy access to applications and data as they are kept in one page and that means time saving.
  • To-do list, calendar and count down timer may help to enhance productivity when fully utilized.

Parting Words

Google had created some fine applications that we can use for free to enhance our productivity. Why don’t you try out some of the applications above and see great results for yourself.

    @Hi Dimatar Nikolov,

    Limiting the number of apps in it is a great idea. If we add in youtube plus other news gadgets in it, we will end up wasting more time. Good point noted.

  2. Hi Vincent,

    That’s a nice article for regular Google.com users.

    If you ask me, iGoogle is great for productivity and organization with not more than 3 apps on it. Otherwise, each time you load it, you’re overloaded with new information, some of witch clutters your thoughts and deconcentrates you.

    @Hi Barbara,

    Google reader is one of my favorite too. If there isn’t Google Reader, I cannot imagine the amount of time I have to spend keeping track of blogs.

    @Hi Anca,

    Their tools are helpful and another factor is they are free too. Maybe that is one of the factor that made them so popular.

    Indeed, Google has so many tools that are extremely helpful. Long live Google 🙂

  5. My favorite online app for productivity is a lovely combination of Google Reader and Tiny URL – it allows me to quickly scan the relevant new posts and alert my network as needed.
