Amazing Speech By Al Paccino
30 Comments October 19, 2008 / Posted in Personal DevelopmentA truly inspiring video that I would like to share with everyone. I had watched this video for countless times and I think that we can learn alot of lessons from it. The scenario is the team is losing after the half and the coach is giving his talk to his players. Watch the above video and refer back to the below lessons.
First Abstract
“We can stay here and get the shit kick out of us or we can fight our way back into the light. We can climb out of hell, one inch at a time.”
Lesson 1
No matter what is your situation in life, you always have the choice to choose to either pick yourself up or just let yourself suffer in despair and keep free falling in life. You have a choice. You, and only you can make the choice and nobody can take it away from you or help you make the choice unless you choose to let them do it. Make the choice, choose what you want in life and create your destiny.
Lesson 2
You don’t aim to make dramatic changes into your life. I don’t believe that anyone can change into a better person with a snap of the finger. Make improvement inches by inches, learn to walk before you run and always remember to make the inch happen.
Second Abstract
“When you get old in life, things get taken from you, but that’s part of life. But you only learn that when you start losing stuff”
Lesson 3
Live consciously and always be aware of what is happening around you. We humans tend to take things for granted when it is just in front of us and we regret only after people or things that we should cherish are gone. It is too late when it is gone, because sometime some things just can’t be replaced. Show gratitude in life, be happy for the little things happening around you and cherish it.
Third Abstract
Life or football, the margin for error is so small. I mean one half a step too late or too early and you don’t quite make it. One half second too slow, too fast you don’t quite catch it. The inches we need are everywhere around us. There are inches in every break in the game, every minute, every second. On this team we fight for that inch. On this team we tell ourselves and everyone else around us to piss us for that inch. We crawl on our fingernails for that inch! Because we know when we had all those inches, that’s going to make the f***ing difference between winning and losing, living and dying.
Lesson 4
In this world, there are countless of opportunities, whether it is to be successful, wealthy or meeting the dream guy or girl that you want to spend the rest of your life with. The key is to be ready for the opportunity. Always be prepared and work hard to be prepared to welcome the opportunities with open arms when they come. There are no lack of opportunities, only lack of people who are well prepared to accept the opportunity. Every small opportunity counts in life and don’t ever think of forfeiting small opportunities in wait of bigger one.
If you want to be a successful stand up comedian, you need to start to entertain 5 audiences before you can manage to entertain 100 audiences. It don’t work the other way round. Accepting small opportunities and preparing yourself ensures you that when the big opportunity comes, you are well prepared to catch it.
Fourth Abstract
In any fight, it’s the only guy who is willing to die who is going to win that inch”
Lesson 5
The above abstract can be summarize by one word, commitment. How committed are you to achieve something? It is the guy with the most commitment that is able to achieve excellence. You don’t see people who say, “I try”, achieve great results. We see excellent results and achievement from people who say, “I will do it no matter what it takes”. The difference in the level of commitment determines what you get, mediocrity or excellence. Choose your take.
Hope you enjoy the video. Leave any comments or suggestion on some good motivational videos that we can learn from.

Absolutely agree with this: “Every small opportunity counts in life and don’t ever think of forfeiting small opportunities in wait of bigger one.”
Time waits for no one and opportunities don’t come everyday. Grab the chance while one can to make the most out of Life

The speech reminds me of one of my favorite historical quotes:
“Gentlemen, we must all hang together in this endeavor. Or most assuredly, we will all hang separately.”
-Benjamin Franklin, to those who were signing the Declaration of Independence.
It’s so easy to forget that those men who we call our founding fathers were revolutionists. They were fed up with the system and wouldn’t take it anymore.
By signing that sheet of paper they were committing themselves. There could be no turning back. They would all either succeed or they would all die.
Benjamin was reminding them that there would be differences of opinions coming up. But that they must fight with one resolve.
Hi polygeek,
You got a very nice point there. “Benjamin was reminding them that there would be differences of opinions coming up. But that they must fight with one resolve.”
With a team that goes in all directions, they can’t win. They can only win if they fight towards a single goal.

Very inspiring Vincent. This was real motivational for me. I enjoyed the video. I especially liked your personal quote “The difference in the level of commitment determines what you get, mediocrity or excellence.”
These are things we must be reminded of. There is a lot of negative energy in the world. Things like this is needed and we must speak these things constantly to keep ourselves surrounded by positvity. Thanks again.
Hi Wildflower,
You are welcome. Glad that this video and article had provided you with some motivation and positive energy. Stay positive

Thought provoking post! =)
keep writing! =)
I read something not too long ago that said this.
Remember the olympics back in 96 or sometime then.
Donovan Bailey won gold in 100M spring and beat the world record by 0.01 seconds. That small margin made him on top of the world.
See, the smallest things that make the huge difference.
@Hi Mehreen,
Thanks for visiting and also your comment. I will keep on writing valuable content and I will appreciate any feedbacks from my readers.
@Hi Tom,
0.01 seconds will help you win it or lose it in Olympics, that is definitely a great example that small margins do make a difference. Thanks for sharing with us Tom.

Any given Sunday is a pretty good movie; this speech pretty much makes it! Its power in those inches, those small steps you take to change your life! I loved how you broke it down into pieces and gave your own take on it. It takes commitment and perseverance to crawl your way through and improve inch by inch. You are not going to get anywhere overnight!Sure you can have talent, but as they say Hard Work Beats Talent When Talent Doesn’t Work Hard
Till then,
Jean
@Jean
Hard work definitely beats talent when talent does not work hard to move forward. This is what I believe too. I hope everyone reading this article will always remind themselves to work hard and move forward everyday no matter how talented you are. Talent does help us to move forward quickly but it is not enough to help us complete the whole journey.

Vincent,
That speach is one of my all time favorites! “When you get old in life things get taken away from you” line really hits a chord. Warns you to appreciate the present and live every moment to the fullist.
Great write up!!! Third Abstract typo “tear ourselves to piss”? lol, may want to fix that
Keep the quotes coming!
-Jake
Hey Jake,
I had watched the video again and it seems like he said “piss us”. Not really sure why.
Cheers,
Vincent
“On this team we tell ourselves and everyone else around us to piss us for that inch. We crawl on our fingernails for that inch!”
I think it’s…
“On this team we *tear* ourselves and everyone else around us to *pieces* for that inch. We *claw* with out fingernails for that inch.”
Or at least that’s what I heard. Cheers!
