Do you read frequently?

Most people do not read much once they had graduated from school. If you are reading frequently, you are the minority that is in a much better position to excel in your life.

However, there is one big mistake that most people made when they read.

It is the lack of implementation.

Implementation Is What Truly Matters

Are you one of those people who seem to know everything but aren’t getting the results that you want?

A minority in the population read regularly to improve themselves. Out of these people, only a few of them implement what they read. You can read all day long but nothing will happen if all you are doing is reading.

Knowledge itself is not powerful.

Knowledge is just a piece of information in your brain. It isn’t anything unless you pick it out from your brain and starting implementing (taking action) on it.

Knowledge + Implementation = Results

You Know It But You Don’t Get It

There are thousands (or millions) of people reading personal development books or blogs. Yet, most of them are junkies. I have to admit that I don’t really apply everything that I picked up. It is not possible to do so. However, it will make a huge difference in our life if we are able to implement half of what we learned.

The ones that always produce successful stories to inspire others are people who consistently implement what they had learned.

They are the minority.

The majority simply fail to implement what they had learned. Most people know they have to take some sort of action in order to get the results that they want, but more often than not they don’t.

As what Seth Godin mentioned in his book, Lynchpin, there is a lizard brain in some part of our brain. This is the part where our primal instinct can be found.

This lizard brain protects us from dangers and it helps us to sense danger, avoid fear and change. It works perfectly well to help our ancestors to survive and keeping them away from the predators. However, letting the lizard brain control your life is going to ensure that you will dwell in mediocrity.

3 Steps To Start Implementing And Getting Results

1) Read And Listen

You need to read the books, blogs and listen to others for ideas that you can use in your life. This is the first step that you need to take. Your local library is a great place to start searching for books that you need. Anything that you are interested in improving can be found in the library. Many people had walked the path before you and their knowledge can be very beneficial to you.

Talk more to others who are expert or better than you in the subject that you wish to improve on. You will be surprised by how much more new knowledge you can pick up from them. This is also the reason why I conduct interviews (listen to these interviews by clicking here) over here at HealthMoneySuccess. We can usually pick up new and valuable information from these interviews.

2) Jot Notes

If you rely on your memory to help you keep track of new ideas, you will be disappointed. I don’t trust my memory because I can’t seem to find the great ideas that I had “collected” in my brain whenever I need them.

If you want to increase the chances of you implementing ideas from books or blogs that you read, the first thing you need to do is to jot them down. Keep a note book and write down all the personal excellence tips that you want to implement in your life. If you want to read a book about personal excellence, check out the Personal Excellence Handbook written by Celestine Chua. There are full of great ideas and tips that you can use to improve your life.

I always keep a note book around me so that I can jot down any ideas that pop out in my mind. Electronics gadgets such as smartphones (iPhone or any phone that is able to allow you to take notes) work well too. Try out which works best for you.

Note: Summarize your notes. Keep things simple and jot down the key ideas that you want to implement in your life.

3) Use A Checklist

A checklist will help you monitor whether you have implemented the ideas that you picked up. Organize your jotted notes write them into a checklist format. This will help to keep your ideas well organized.

Look through the list and start completing them one at a time. Subsequently, strike off the ideas that you had implemented.

Conclusion

If you read regularly, the amount of new ideas you will pick up will grow over time. These ideas will just remain as ideas unless action is taken to produce a result.

You can finish a book titled How To Make More Friends you are not going to make more friends if you don’t even bother to initiate (implement the ideas in the book) to talk to others.

Decide now that you will not be a personal development junkie anymore. Be one that will collect great ideas through your learning from seminars, audio books, blogs and books. Be one that act upon all these ideas that you collected and you will experience exponential growth and get fast results in your life.

Do you know what is your biggest nightmare? What is it that you are really terrified that will happen to you? Are you terrified of being broke for the rest of your life? Or are you fearful of being a nobody for the entire life? Do you know exactly what is it?

You may be puzzled about why did I ask you this question. But I believe this may be the question that can help us to get out there and start living and achieving.

Why You Need To Know About Your Biggest Nightmare?

I once read something by Anthony Robbins which states if you want to achieve success, you will need something to push you away from pain and pull you towards pleasure. When you are constantly moving away from your pain and moving towards pleasure, you are moving forward everyday to achieve success.

Your biggest nightmare in life act as the pain that will push you forward. Most of us avoid the feeling of pain as no one wants to feel painful and suffer from it. However when you find that you are not living the life that you wish to be living, it is time to do something about it. Bring out your biggest nightmare to help push you into action.

My Biggest Nightmare

Here are some of my biggest nightmares in life…

1. Being a nobody for the rest of my life.

2. Doing something that I hate for the rest of my life.

3. Work for 50 years only to find myself died broke.

4. A life of mediocrity.

These are the nightmares of my life. If I find myself slacking off, I refer these nightmares and guess what? I jumped into action and start to push forward to achieve my dreams(pleasure) immediately!

Your nightmares can be a great source of motivation.

The worst thing that can happen in our life is to look back and to find that we are capable of achieving better.

How our life turn out totally lies in our hands. If you are not happy with your life right now, go and do something about it. Know your biggest nightmare and use it to push you towards your dreams.

Cheers,
Vincent

It is hard to maintain motivated everyday and there are bound to be times when we are caught in a slump. This is normal and everybody will have their bad day or period when they just don’t feel like doing anything. What is important is that we must be able to get out of the slump and keep on moving forward.

There will be times when we will stop our exercise routine, stop writing for our blogs or not completing our tasks at work and we may find it hard to resume those work. I went through slumps myself and I had found some ways that work, which may help you to get your butt off the couch and start working again.

10 Ways To Help You Get Out Of A Slump

1. Stop!

When you are caught in a slump, most probably you are gaining new habits which are bad, such as doing unproductive tasks. You need to monitor yourself and see what you are doing differently when you are productive and when you are not productive. Most of the time, you can see that there are some changes to your habits that cause it. So stop and reset yourself, start your day differently by doing the most important things first or minimize your time wasters.

2. Be inspired

One way to help you spring into action is to get yourself inspired. I find my inspirations from books, podcasts, videos, success stories of others and blogs. Go to youtube and just search for inspirational videos, visit TED for talks or visit my podcasts or MorningCoach.com for personal development podcasts. When you are inspired, you will feel a rush of energy in you to help you start moving forward again.

3. Goal

If you have the habit of setting goals, it is time to look back at it and see what you had achieved and what you had not. For those goals you had not achieved, look back and reflect why did not achieve your goals and are those goals truly what you want? If you have too many goals for yourself, most likely you will not achieve any of them. Set a single goal for yourself and direct all your energy towards it. This will increase your probability of achieving it.

4. Post your goal

I used to write down my goals in a book and I find that I usually don’t achieve them. I found out that if I don’t see the goal that I had set for myself, I will not achieve it as there is a tendency to forget about it. Nowadays I got a vision board right in front of my working desk that reminds me that I have something to aim for. So every day when I am about to slack off and shift into a slump mode, I will see my goals right in front of me to remind myself to keep working hard for it.

Go write down your goals and if it is possible write it on a very big piece of paper and paste it at somewhere visible. If you can see your goals daily, there will be a constant reminder to tell you to keep working towards it.

5. Publicize your goal

It can be embarrassing for some people to publicize their goal because they fear that others may laugh at them. You can avoid it by finding your really good friends (if they laugh at your goals, most probably they are not good friends of yours) or online forums where people share the same ideals (personal development forums). When you share your goals with others, it makes you more committed to achieving it and it also help to inculcate a greater sense of responsibility.

6. Find a partner

As regular readers of my blog, you will know that I always emphasized and encouraged you to find a partner or form a mastermind group to help you move towards your goal. It is really going to help when you have someone beside you to help motivate you and keep you going when you feel like giving up. Go out there and find someone who want to achieve similar goals to you and work hard together towards it. It really does help to increase your motivation.

7. Baby steps

How do you eat an elephant? One bite at a time. So how do you achieve your goals? One step at a time. Sometimes our goals can be overwhelming and it will do us good if we break down our goals into smaller pieces and start to tackle them bit by bit. If you want to achieve a body to die for, it isn’t possible to start lifting weights for 4 hours a day. Start by exercising 10 minutes each day and build up your momentum and slowly increase your intensity.

8. Momentum

If you succeed on carrying out your routine for that day, build up your momentum and keep doing it. We would normally feel good when we have achieve what we want and we need to take that feeling and build on it. Don’t stop when you are gathering momentum, once you had stopped, you will have to start all over to gather the momentum again.

9. Positive thinking

Our thoughts are powerful enough to change our state. If you think about the scenario where you broke up with your girlfriend/boyfriend, most likely your mood will change and you will feel depressed. So when you are working towards your goals, if you harbor negative thoughts most likely you will fall into a depressed state. Be aware of your negative self talk and when you find yourself talking negatively to yourself, stop it and say something that pump you up. Some simple ones such as “If X can do this, so can I!” or “I can do this!”. You can get yourself excited by taking note of your physiology, start jumping around or pump your fist in the air and shout out something that empower yourself. But do this in somewhere others can’t see you, or they might start to think that you are crazy. This is something that I do too and even though it sounds weird, it works.

10. Get a mentor

Find someone who have already reached the places where you want to reach. They can help to anticipate the problems that you will encounter and warn you beforehand and most likely you can pick up valuable knowledge from them too. A mentor can also help to keep you focus on your goal and guide you along the way.

Cheers,

Do You Know What You Don’t Like?

How many people actually don’t know what they don’t like? I believe it is almost non. Most of the people know what they don’t like but sometimes it is ironic that even though they knew what they don’t like, they still choose to do it.

Recently I had a talk with my friends over a cup of coffee and we are discussing about the topic related to having a job. Then suddenly an idea hit me and I am thinking that why are there people who hate what they are doing but chose not to do something about it?

One of my friends always complained to me how bad her job is and what she don’t like about the job and the constant whining definitely drives me mad. I find that the situation is a simple one, if you don’t like what you are doing, then stop doing it. Doesn’t it make sense?

Let us look at an example; let say if you do not like to eat carrots then most probably you will not choose dishes with carrots because you simply do not like it. However the situation becomes complicated when you tell someone who hate their job to stop what they are doing. They will rebuke you with lots of reasons or excuses such as they are too old, they have to feed their family or they have to pay their school fees. I’m not saying that these reasons are not valid, these reasons are important and we need to consider and make plans for it before quitting. But instead of constantly spending your energy to generate reasons, isn’t it better if you can focus that energy on trying to find opportunities instead?

You tend to find this cycle in people who hate what they are doing but chose to do it anyway.

This is a cycle that will make them miserable as long as they stay doing what they hate to be doing.

How To Get Rid Of The Miserable Cycle

In order to get rid of being miserable and causing others around you to become miserable too, you will need to take responsibility for your own life. If you do not like your job then stop doing it. If you choose not to quit it, then stop complaining because it is your choice that you want to continue doing what you are doing.

However if you really decide that enough is enough and you want out of what you hate doing, then have a plan and make it happen instead of rebuking others with reasons of why you cannot quit your job. Operate from a positive mindset to generate ideas on how to quit your job instead of thinking of reasons to argue with others why you cannot quit your job will definitely be more beneficial instead.

If you operate from a positive mindset instead of a negative one, you can generate ideas that can help you stop doing what you hate to be doing and start doing something that you love. You can save an amount of money that can last you for months so that you can quit your job and start to work on something that you want to be doing. Or start something on the side line before quitting or maybe even quit your job and get a part time job so that you have time to work on what you really want to be doing.

There are lots of possibilities so don’t limit yourself by operating in the wrong frame of mind. As what Henry Ford says, “If you think you can do a thing or think you can’t do a thing, you’re right.”

Parting Words

What I want to drive home in this article is that I want people to be live more consciously. Stop doing something that you know you obviously hate. If you hate your job, find another that you love, or maybe you just hate the term J-O-B, then go start your own business. Whining, complaining and seeking sympathy from others then rebuking them with reasons of why you cannot stop doing what you hate to be doing doesn’t help at all. The only way to help yourself is to start taking responsibility for your own life and the desired changes.

To your success,

Dota

I have recently started playing Defense Of The Ancient (Dota) and it is a real time strategy game. This is how the game works. There are 2 sides each with 5 players in the team. Each of the player will choose and control an individual hero and the main objective is to destroy the main tower of the opposition team.

If you want to win the game, here are some of the things that you will need to know or do

Your hero’s strength and weakness

Keep a balance between attack and defending

Teamwork and communication

Strategies and planning

Items to buy

Be observant and be aware of your surroundings

What You Can Learn From Dota

Your hero’s strength and weakness

Know your enemy and know yourself and you can fight a hundred battles without disaster.

~ Sun Tzu

In Dota, you will need to know what are the strengths of your hero, the things they are capable of doing and their weakness. You need this information so that you can play to your strength and minimize your weakness. Trying to pump skills that your hero is weak in will take too much effort and time and most of the time you will only receive mediocre results. If you are playing as a hero who has great strength and low mana pool for magic, it doesn’t really make sense to put in all the effort to turn him into a character who uses magic. It will be much more easier to train him in terms of strength where he can really excel.

In real life, you will need to find out your strength and play to it. Instead of trying to turn your weakness into your strength, why not minimize your weakness but spend most of your effort to work on your strength? This will help u to use the least amount of effort to attain the maximum result. It is a classical example of the 80/20 principle.

Know when to attack and when to defense

“Work, love and play are the great balance wheels of man’s being”

~ Orison Swett Marden

In an hour long game, there will be multiple times when you will take turns attacking and defending. However the team will lose if they only know how to attack and neglect about defending and vice versa. Dota is a game where you need to strike a balance in attacking and defending in order to win.

In our life, there are examples where we spend too much time in ether side and that can cause us our downfall. If you are always “defending” in life, that means you are playing too timid and staying too much in your own safety zone, you will lose out the chance to win. How about spending too much time in “attack”? If you are spending too much time on trying to achieve success in your career but you forget about your family and friends which are things that are also important, your success will be meaningless. You wouldn’t want to return back home with lots of money but without anyone to celebrate with.

Teamwork and communication

“The single biggest problem in communication is the illusion that it has taken place.”

~ George Bernard Shaw

Because it is a 5 v 5 game, you need to have great teamwork and communication in order to win the game. You wouldn’t want to go out to attack while your team mate is trying to flee away, leaving you alone to face 5 opponent heroes at the same time(My teammate had scolded me for leaving him behind before). The lesson for this point is always let your team mates know what you want to do and also what you are thinking instead of assuming that they know what you are thinking.

There are too much time when we assumed that others knew our thoughts. This will lead us to lots of misunderstanding. If you are working in a team, you will need to hone your communication skills as it can help you to clear up lots of misunderstanding and get things done in the most efficient way. One way you can use to communicate better is to not to assume. Do not assume that others knew what you want, instead deliver the information in a clear and concise way to them. You can tell them to paraphrase what you had said to ensure that they had understood it.

Strategies and planning

“It pays to plan ahead. It wasn’t raining when Noah built the ark.”

~ Anonymous

If you do not plan ahead to attack in Dota, you will find your team mate confused and they will stay idle waiting for something to happen. That means that there is a high possibility that your team mates will be outnumbered when engaging the enemy as the attack will not be in sync. All these can be prevented by planning ahead, so that all 5 of you can attack at the same time.

You will need a plan if you want to have a successful attack and it is the same if you want successful results in your life. A good plan can help you to have a vision of what you want and it also act as a guide for you to follow.

Items to buy

A fool and his money are soon parted

~Anonymous

There are lots of items in Dota but they are not meant for every hero. You do not really need some of those items and if you spend huge amount of money on those items, you are basically wasting your hard earned money.

There are times when we spend our money on things that we don’t really need and it sucks money out of our pocket. Those are liabilities. If we spend too much money on getting a cell phone, new car or branded goods every now and then, we will not have enough resources to buy assets. So what are assets? As what Robert Kiyosaki said, “Assets are things that are putting money into your pocket.” Assets such as properties, stocks, books and etc are what we should be accumulating as they are able to provide additional streams of income.

Be observant and be aware of your surroundings

The Chinese use two brush strokes to write the word ‘crisis.’ One brush stroke stands for danger; the other for opportunity. In a crisis, be aware of the danger – but recognize the opportunity.
~ John F. Kennedy

One unwritten rule of the game is you must always pay attention to your mini map. The mini map shows you the whole picture of the game and you will need to check it out frequently to be aware of the positioning of your allies and enemies. If you pay attention to the mini map, you can also look out for opportunities to help gank (double team) an enemy’s hero. Which means that you will get more kills, money and experience.

First of all, I would like to test how observant you are and your awareness of your surroundings. Do you know which light is on the top of the traffic light? Is it the red or the green? I believe most of you have hesitated before answering even though you cross the road everyday. The answer is red. Did you get that right? If you answered correctly without any hesitation, congrats! Most people are not sure about the answer and you will be among the minority if you got that right.

In the real world, there are lots of opportunities that are waiting for us to grab it. All we need to do is to be aware of the opportunities around us. Living without any awareness of the surroundings means that we will miss out on chances that can be our “lucky break“. My favorite example of how awareness can help one to be rich is the mistake prone secretary who created the correction fluid which turn out to be a million dollar product.

Start by consciously choosing to be aware of your surroundings until it becomes a habit. It helps if you stay curious and slow down your pace of life. Rushing from one place to another or working on one task after another without resting can cause our mind to work in a subconscious way, which means that you will not be aware of what is happening around you.

Parting Words

I really enjoy playing games on my PC or Xbox360 and I find that I can always learn something from it. Most people think that playing games are a waste of time but I hope this article can change their thoughts. By the way, did I mention that I saw a research that state people who play games have a higher possibility of achieving better results in their career?

Cheers,

Mediocrity

Have you ever thought about why are there some people so successful yet others are stuck in mediocrity? There may be many reasons. It may be the difference in skills, talent or living environment and etc. But sometimes I wonder are these the real reasons that cause people to be mediocre?

I believe everyone have one skill or another that they are particularly good at. Even if they are not a master at it, they can still choose to polish their skills. How about talent? I had read this in one of Malcolm Gladwell’s book (can’t really remember which one, I think it is Outliers), it says that somebody had gathered a group of geniuses and tried to train them to achieve success. However the project turned out to be a failure because only a low percentage of those geniuses turned out to be successful. The others failed to achieve much success and some even end up working in low end jobs. Those are the talented people who had failed and this shows that talent doesn’t equals to everything.

Unconducive living environment may cause us to be stuck in mediocrity but I have my doubts about it too. There are so many successful people who came from poor living environment and probably one of the famous example would be Oprah.

So what is the reason that cause mediocrity?

The Reason Is…

I believe mediocrity will only happen when one settles for mediocrity. Talent, skills and living environment are factors that don’t really matter when compared to your mindset. Those who settle for mediocrity will eventually become mediocre no matter how talented they are. Those who chose to settle for something lower than their expectations will always achieve lesser. This means that you can avoid mediocrity if you choose not to settle for mediocrity.

5 Ways To Avoid Mediocrity

1. Have A Dream

A dream is needed for you to avoid mediocrity as it allows you to have something to work towards to. This means that we are moving forward instead of staying idle. You should always keep your dream in mind and constantly remind yourself to achieve it. Now is a good time to think about what you really want in your life. What is it that you truly enjoy doing that you would do it even if you are not getting paid for it?

2. Do Things Differently

If you do what others think you should be doing, what results do you think you will get? Results that are the same as others! So if you want to get out of mediocrity and get excellent results, then do things that are different from what others are doing that get them mediocre results.

3. Get Out Of Your Safety Zone

Are you staying too much in your safety zone? If you are spending too much time in your safety zone, that means you are losing out opportunities that can take you a level forward to your success. If you find yourself getting bored over things that you are doing now, most probably you are staying in your safety zone and not doing anything to move into a new level of playing field. It is the same as basketball game. If you spend too much time defending in your own zone, how are you going to score at the other end?

4. Do Something Challenging

When we start to slack and want avoid doing things that are hard, we tend to move into a slump in our life. In life, things that are worth doing are things that are hard to do. Things that are hard to do also guarantee you the best benefits. Someone who is able to repair an air plane will receive better salary than someone who can repair a coffee machine. A cab driver will not earn as much as a F1 racer. Enough said, you get the point.

5. Do Not Settle For Less

This is the point where I want to emphasize on. If you want to avoid mediocrity, don’t ever settle for anything less than what you really want. By not settling for less, you tend to get what you want if you can persevere on. Think about it, when you are a child and you really want something, you will throw a tantrum, cry or scream and do what ever it takes to convince your parents to buy it for you. Most probably your parents will give up and give in to you.

How about now? Think about the item you had bought recently. Most probably that is the item that you truly want and you do not want to settle for anything for less. Maybe it is your favorite dress, IT gadgets or your new car? Most of the time you will get the things when you want it badly, isn’t that right? You will get things you really want it. But you will fail to get it when you don’t truly want it and start to settle for less.

Parting Words

Nobody wants to be mediocre. It is something that everyone will try to avoid it. Everyone wants to have results and success in life but only a minority amount of people will achieve it. You can be the among the minority if you think big, persevere and don’t settle for anything lesser. This mindset will help you break out of the mediocrity and help you achieve what you have always wanted to achieve.

Cheers,

I would never die for my beliefs because I might be wrong.
Bertrand Russell

Mental Barriers

The above video remind us how Roger Bannister refuse to accept the belief that it is impossible to complete a mile under 4 minutes and finally achieved it. He completed a mile under 4 minutes which no body thought was possible because he relentlessly trained to achieve it without giving regards to the thoughts of others.

There are many times when we let down ourselves by listening too much to others. Others may had failed in their ventures and they will tell you that they had tried doing something that doesn’t work. The worst scenario is that we believe so strongly in them and adopt their negative mindset which create huge obstacles for ourselves.

Beliefs are not 100% true

I believe many of us will hear about running a business is hard, creating an online business is just a scam and the stock market is only for the rich. These are just beliefs of others that had previously failed and did not try again to make it work. Why am I so sure about it? Because I see others have created successful businesses, there are successful online business being created and there are also people who start out from nothing and got rich by investing in the stock market.

If you are procrastinating on doing something that you truly love and believe that it will work, why let others stop you from doing it? Others may not have even walk down the path that you intended to walk and they may just be telling you that it is not possible because they failed to achieve it or they are telling you what they have heard in the cafe. Can you even believe in the chatters that they had overheard in the cafe?

If you want to do something but others are telling you not to do it, first of all, look for successful evidences. If there are others who have walked down the path you intended to walk and succeeded, it means that what you plan on doing is possible. The second step you would need to do is to seek them out and learn from them. Tap into their brain and know what is the blueprint for their success. Their knowledge will help you to cut short your learning curve.

Parting Words

Even if you plan on doing something that no others had succeeded, such as the example of Roger Bannister, you can always try it out and see how it goes. If Thomas Edison and the Wright brothers have never tried to create the light bulb and build the air plane respectively, we will not have the luxury of having light in our house at night or traveling to other countries by plane.

Do not allow beliefs of others to stop you from doing what you want to do. If you want to know whether anything will work out, the only way for you to verify it is to take action and do it. I hope you pick up something from this article and the most important lesson of today is to remember that you are your biggest obstacle and choose carefully who to listen to.

Vincent
Embracing positive beliefs
