Clutters in your wardrobe

Clutters tend to gather in our wardrobe over a period of time. There will be clothes that are too rugged, too small, too big, unwanted or just unsightly but we are just too attached to it to either throw it away or just donate it to charity.

Recently I decided to declutter my wardrobe because I find that it is getting too messy and majority of my clothes are just lying in it. Not only they are taking up space, it is also tiring to tidy up the the huge amount of clothes.

**Note**The above photo is the amount of clothes that I had threw out of my wardrobe.

6 Reasons Why We Are So Attached To Our Old Clothes

There are a few reasons why we do not want to throw out our old clothes and here are some of them.

1. You feel that you will need it somewhere in the future.

Trust me, this is the thought that will appear in your mind when you are decluttering your wardrobe. It will seems like you will need every piece of your clothes in the future and you will be reluctant to throw it away. I had a particular shirt that I had failed to throw it away or give it to charity for 3 years straight because I thought that I may wear it somewhere in the future. Guess what? I have not touched it for 3 years straight.

2. It is a gift.

It is courteous to keep gifts given to us. However if the gift is some new clothes that you just can’t fit into, why bother keeping it? All it takes up is space and dust in your wardrobe. Donating it to the charity will be a much better option then keeping it in the wardrobe.

3. Sentimental value.

It can be hard to throw away clothes that have accompanied you from your teens till now. Somehow it just seems like they are more comfortable then any of your new clothes even when they have shown signs of wear and tear. A good rule of thumb, you can find holes in it, it is time for you to throw it away.

4. Hogging.

There will be people who love to hog their clothes. They just keep on increasing their collections year after year. The habit of hogging creates a byproduct, which is clutter and hogging your clothes only creates more work for you as you will need to maintain more clothes and it is harder to search for your clothes in a cluttered wardrobe.

5. Fear that you will run out of clothes to wear.

I had feared that I will not have enough clothes to wear after throwing a huge amount of clothes out of my wardrobe but it seems like my fear was redundant. I still have more than enough clothes to wear even after throwing out the pile of clothes that you saw in the above photo. Even if you really do run out of clothes to wear, that means you will be able to buy new clothes that are more fashionable and fit you better.

6. Your clothes doesn’t fit but it seems new.

No matter how new your clothes are, it doesn’t even matter when it does not fit you. You may say that you can fit into it after shedding some weight, but how long have you been giving this excuse to keep your non fitting clothes?

3 Steps To Declutter Your Wardrobe

Here are the steps that I have used to declutter my wardrobe.

1. Take out everything in your wardrobe

Take out everything you have in your wardrobe and throw them on your bed or the floor (if it is clean). Sort them into categories such as clothes you will wear at home, clothes you will wear for work and clothes you will wear for outings. Include your own categories if needed.

2. Elimination

It is hard to throw your clothes away when every single piece of it seems so important to you. I know and I understand. You have to be “cold hearted” and stand firm in your decision. You need to go through every category and remove clothes that you did not wear for the past 1 year, clothes that are not fitting and old. You know the definition of old, don’t fake yourself into thinking it is new when it is really old.

After the first round of elimination, you need to do a second round of elimination. Go through your categories again to do a second round of elimination following the same rules above. You need to do this because most likely you will hold back yourself from removing your clothes in first round. The second round will help you to remove more clothes which are “useless” to you.

3. Pack your clothes

Congratulations! If you have followed the elimination process above, you should be able to eliminate majority of the clothes that you do not wear any more. All you need to do now is to put your clothes back into your wardrobe. If you would like to keep your wardrobe organized, pack your clothes in categories (example:shorts, shirts, tees). This will help you to find your clothes easier and it will keep your wardrobe neat and tidy.

Parting Words

Always remember the 80/20 principle, only 20 percent of your clothes are worn for 80 percent of the time. This means we should be able to eliminate at least 60-70 percent of our clothes in our wardrobe. You should keep it a habit to declutter your wardrobe at least once a year. Not only it helps to keep your wardrobe neat and tidy, you can also donate your used clothes to the charity to help others.

Cheers,
Vincent

Living In The Past

Have you ever met some people who love to talk to you about their past and they will start telling you about how great they were during those time? Sometimes it can be interesting to listen to their stories but when they start to boast about it a bit too frequently, it can turn out to be rather irritating.

Normally, those people who like to boast about their past are not as successful now as compared to them in the past. I believe that they are basking in their past glories as it helps them to feel better about themselves and it also give them a certain value of self worth.

The problem is, hanging on to their past achievements in this case will not help them as they are only living in the past and not trying to move forward in life. Their past achievements now acts only as dead weights hanging on to them to slow down their movements.

Looking Back In The Past

When I was studying in my secondary school (I believe it is middle school in US), I love sports and one of my favorite sports is basketball. I was playing the game for almost everyday and I also actively participated in sport events such as track and field and cross country events. I wasn’t too bad at sports and I won quite a few trophies during those time.

After I had graduated from secondary school, I became rather inactive and I did not continue playing basketball or picked up any new sports. However I couldn’t let go of my past achievements in sports and I found myself constantly talking about it.

The past became my comfort zone.

When there are any conversation regarding about sports, somehow I will manage to talk about my past achievements. Whenever I talked about my past glories, I felt great. Even though the feeling was good, deep down in my heart I knew that I wasn’t happy at the present moment because I did not have any new achievements to be proud of.

It was until one fine day when I am thinking to myself, “Why am I bragging so much about my past achievements? Am I successful now and do I have any new achievement that I am proud of?”

When I thought about this question, I was suddenly awakened and I knew that I am not happy about myself at that moment as I am not achieving as much as I would like to and I am only keeping those past memories as a way to make myself feel better. All those time I am only sitting in my own comfort zone which is in the past and I can only bask in my past glories.

I knew that in order for me to achieve new achievements in life, I need to let go of my past achievements and strive to achieve new ones. Even though it is hard to let go, I decided to cast aside my achievements in the past and focus on getting new ones.

I had read books that mentioned that our past success can help to inspire us to achieve other new success in life but somehow this time round I found that my past successes are hindering me instead. It seems like letting go of them will be the wiser choice this time.

I decided to throw away off my trophies and medals and not to brag about my past anymore.

What Happened Next

So what do you think happened after I threw away my trophies and medals which are my physical attachments to the past?

One thing for sure is that I got a lot more room for myself and less clutters, both physically and mentally. Another thing was I felt insecure as I do not have any past achievements to lean back on. This cause me to think a lot more harder on how to achieve new achievements. When I was brain storming for what I can achieve, I felt happy and excited about all the possibilities that could happen.

The dead weights were removed and I had seen a huge amount of possibilities in front of me and I couldn’t wait to achieve them. My life started to improve since I had let go of the my past achievements. I started to be more in the present and I continue to accumulate new achievements. I am enjoying every moment of the present right now. I did not know that chasing after new goals can be that exciting and it is definitely much more better than living in the past.

Your Turn

So are you holding on to something of your past that doesn’t help you? Are you living in the present or the past? There are a lot more possibilities by letting go of the past and living in the present. If your past doesn’t help you to achieve more in life, let it go and focus your energy in the present to achieve new heights in your life.

To your success,
Vincent
Enjoying the present

Do you have a work desk like this?

Whether it is our wardrobe or work desk, we tend to accumulate clutters in our lives. Clutters weigh us down and it will tend to clutter your mind too.

It gives a feeling that you are disorganized, like to procrastinate and have low productivity. First impression counts, so make sure your boss don’t ever see you in a cluttered desk. =)

My Work Desk

Consolation Prize: My desk is not as bad as the first work desk in this article.

This is my desk where I frequently do my work and yes, my blog. Before I was typing this post, my mind was cluttered and I was basically running out of space as my books seems to be crawling towards me slowly.

I do have a good filing system, so I do not have letters all over the place but the major problems are my books, magazines and newspaper. As you can see, I have stuffs that are not suppose to be on my work desk such as the medicines and last week newspapers. Behind the stacks of books are my stacks of Newsweek and Reader’s Digest magazines. I love to read and prefer to have my books near me so I can grab them whenever I need the new amount of information but I think it is time to do something about it before they cover my whole work desk.

**If you are observant, you can see that my calendar is still on Oct 08 (It is November now Vincent!), but if you had not noticed it, stay unnoticed. *wink

The Makeover

The work desk seems to be a lot better now. I had left all the books that were previously on my desk into my bookshelf and only left my notebooks and one book that I am currently reading on the table. You can have a sneak peak at my vision board near the top of the picture, so whenever I look up I am constantly reminded of my goals and dreams. The magazines and newspaper that were overdue were dumped and some were kept in view as I am interested in some information in it and yes yes, I did not forget about it, I had flipped the calendar to November. *smile

7 Ways to Remove the Clutters On Your Desk

1. Throw everything that you don’t need

Do you still have your last week newspaper or the scrap paper that was meant to be in the waste paper basket on the table? Clear everything that you don’t need into the rubbish bin and see the amount of useless items that you had accumulated.

2. Clean up

I can see a thick layer of dust on my work desk that was hidden by my books. So remember to clean up and see how clean your work desk can be. It feels great too, trust me.

3. Have a filing system

Do you have letters or receipts that seems to magically multiply on your table? (When do they have a breeding system?) Have a filing system and keep those things that you need to KIV and allocate a time in the day to clear those items.

4. Leave only things that you need on the table

Simple as it is. Don’t leave your overdue magazines, your 3 years old to do list or multiple pens on the table. Will you really go back to complete your 3 years old to do list or use 10 pens at the same time?

5. Have specific drawers

Have specific drawers that stores similar items. It will be easier for you to find the stuff you want when you need it and it also helps to keep things off the table.

6. Have a system for papers

Have an inbox that deals with reports that you need to read or sign by today and an outbox that you will transfer your papers to once you are done with it. Remember to clear the outbox regularly too.

7. Have a routine.

Make a commitment to clean up your desk or your room every once a week because the clutters tend to come back again and again. By having a routine to clean up every week, you can keep the clutters at bay and have optimal productivity.

Enjoy your cleaning everyone!

Cheers
