<p>A thousand miles journey begins with a single step. It is hard for most of us to take that single step. However, it is harder for people who took the first step to continue walking to complete the journey.</p>

<p>We will need tons of motivation to achieve our goals. The bad news is that most people lose their steam halfway down the road. The good news is motivation can be easily refilled to help you keep on moving towards your goal.<span id="more-2466"></span></p>
<h3>Your Motivation Level Fluctuates, But It&#8217;s Ok</h3>
<p><a href="http://www.healthmoneysuccess.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/10/Presentation1.jpg"><img class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-2489" title="high and low points" src="http://www.healthmoneysuccess.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/10/Presentation1.jpg" alt="" width="503" height="350" /></a></p>
<p>As you can see in the diagram above, your motivation level swings from a high point to a low point regularly. This is perfectly normal. Nobody can sustain a high motivation level all the time.</p>
<p>You will meet many ship harbors (pit stops or resting point) during your journey to arrive at your goals. You will know that you have arrived at these harbors when you start to find yourself lacking in motivation, feel tired, have doubts and don&#8217;t feel inspired any more to take action to move towards your goals.</p>
<p>Some may see that arriving at the harbor is something that is they do not desire. Wouldn&#8217;t it be wonderful if you can be highly motivated for 365 days?</p>
<p>It is almost impossible that one will not meet any obstacles, doubts and negative emotions when they are trying to achieve something.</p>
<p>These harbors will tempt you to rest more than you required and you can waste tons of time here if you don’t realize it. These harbors are not our enemy. Instead, we should use this period to help us refuel or sharpen our blades before we move on again.</p>
<p>One mistake that many people made is that they spend too much time in the harbor. The longer you stay there, the more you want to dwell in there.</p>
<p>The problems with spending too much time in the harbor are</p>
<ol>
<li>You lose your momentum that you gathered</li>
<li>You waste time and prolong the time frame that you need to reach your goals.</li>
<li>The more you rest, the more you want to rest.</li>
</ol>
<h3>Create Your Motivation Toolbox To Help You To Start Moving Towards Your Goals Again</h3>
<p>A ship need to make regular stop in the harbor to refuel and to remove the barnacles that had grown on the ship structure that weigh it down. Your motivation is like the fuel that the ship needs in order to move. Your doubts, negative emotions, fear, and frustrations are like barnacles that slowly attached themselves onto the ship.</p>
<p>To make sure that you can relentlessly move towards your goals instead of dwelling in the harbor, you need to inspire (refuel) yourself and remove the barnacles (clear the negative emotions that are weighing you down).</p>
<p>One way to do that is to create a motivation toolbox. A motivation toolbox is a collection of materials that can inspire you and motivate yourself back into action again. The aim is to use the materials in the toolbox to help you get out of the low point you are in.</p>

<li>Books</li>
</ol>
<h3>Quotes &#8211; The Quick Fix</h3>
<p>Accumulating quotes is a great place for you to start. Many wonderful quotes out there are inspiring. What I do is to collect the quotes that I find inspiring in a word document. You can collect them using Words document, Google Docs or any of your preferred words program. You can simply open up this words document to go through the quotes whenever you need a dose of inspiration.</p>

<p>One of the traits of successful people is to take massive action. You can find personal development authors stressing that taking action is important in every self-help book. However, there is always one thing that is stopping us from taking action. It is the feeling of reluctance to do anything and the lack of motivation.</p>
<p>Recently I have been thinking about how can I sustain my motivation for taking action. Even though I am blogging about personal development and I had written about taking massive action, I have to confess that there are times when the feeling of reluctance and lack of motivation stop me from doing so.<span id="more-2057"></span></p>
<p>There will be times when procrastination takes place and the feeling of reluctance to do anything kicks in. My productivity usually takes a dip when this happen. I will spend some time in this low productivity period before I start to take massive action and be productive again.</p>
<p>I wonder what will happen if I am capable of taking massive action in a more consistent manner? What if I can overcome the feeling of reluctance and take massive action consistently? I believe my life would change more drastically if I am able to do it.</p>
<h3>Brainstorming For Answers</h3>
<p>I have been brainstorming for answers to help me boost my productivity by overcoming the feeling of reluctance and to sustain my motivation. I did not find any answers to my questions. I have tried out other methods shared by personal development authors and speakers but I find that something is lacking in their methods.</p>
<p>I did my night run yesterday and I was listening to an audio book, Cultivating An Unshakable Character by Jim Rohn. He spoke about the topic of how to sustain our motivation and how to overcome our feeling of reluctance. This is what I am looking for and it is great that Jim Rohn already has an answer for me.</p>
<p>He mentioned that to overcome reluctance and <a title="motivate yourself" href="http://www.healthmoneysuccess.com/1093/how-to-motivate-yourself-in-6-simple-steps/" target="_blank">sustain your motivation</a>, there are 2 things that you need to do. The first thing is to keep track of your time and the second thing is to bring others into your plan or goal.</p>
<p><strong>1. Keep Track Of Your Time</strong></p>
<p>If you do not keep track of your finance, you will not know where your money went and you may end up broke at the end of every month. If you do not keep track of your time, you will lose your most valuable asset and achieve nothing in the end.</p>
<p>Jim Rohn has recommended keeping a time log and taking note of everything that you did every day for at least a week. This can help you to reflect upon what you are doing, how much time you are putting into serious work and how much time you are wasting daily.</p>
<p>I always experience inertia (reluctance) when I want to start taking action. For this article that I had wrote, I had wasted 30 minutes walking around doing nothing before I set my mind to write it. This little amount of time wasted daily when accumulated in a week is a lot of time.</p>
<p>By keeping a time log and recording what you did in every 30 minutes interval daily can help me to track where I spend my time. Keeping a time log can help me know how much time I have wasted. This can help me to overcome the feeling of reluctance and get into action faster to avoid wasting time.</p>
<p>I plan to start recording my time log tomorrow. I will write a post on it after a week and share the results with you.</p>
<p><strong>2. Bring Others Into Your Plan</strong></p>
<p>It is easy to break a single chopstick but it is hard to break a bunch of chopsticks. It is hard to achieve your goals alone. I already have a mastermind group and I know how important it is to gather like-minded people together and try to achieve their goals.</p>
<p>I have a weekly meet up with my mastermind group. We will meet in person every start of the month and for the other weeks, we will conduct a talk using Skype. This weekly meet ups allow us to reflect upon our action for the week and plan for the new week. We also encourage and motivate each other into taking massive action to achieve our goals.</p>
<p>Jim Rohn mentioned something that caught my attention. He said that to sustain motivation, you would need to think about how achieving your goals can help your family or others. This is what I am missing. I do not have a clear picture of how my goals can help my family and others. It has always been me, me and all about me.</p>
<p>I believe this is why I am constantly experiencing a dip in motivation and productivity. I have decided to write down my goals once again and this time round, bring my family members into picture. For example, writing down how can achieving my goal in running a highly profitable business can help out my family and how I am able to help provide for my love ones and allow them to experience abundance.</p>
<h3>Parting Words</h3>
<p>How much difference will it make to your life if you have 50% less feeling of reluctance? How can the increased productivity help you achieve your goals much faster? What if you can sustain never ending motivation? I bet you will be living a life of abundance and prosperity.</p>
<p>I believe anyone can achieve their goals much faster and experience lesser obstacles if they can overcome their feeling of reluctance, start taking massive action and have never ending motivation.</p>
<p>When you are trying to achieve your goals with feeling of reluctance and lack of motivation, it is like running with a heavy weight tied to you. Stop allowing your feeling of reluctance and lack of motivation tie you down. Get rid of them and start achieving like you are suppose to.</p>

<p>Will Smith is one of my favorite idols and I love his <a href="http://www.healthmoneysuccess.com/273/is-your-attitude-bringing-you-towards-success/" target="_blank">attitude towards his life</a> and work. In this video, he had mentioned that running and reading are the keys to life. I got to agree with him and I understand as I am an avid reader and runner myself.<span id="more-1981"></span></p>
<p>I have been training hard for my marathon (<a href="http://www.healthmoneysuccess.com/1783/how-much-have-you-grown-in-this-year/" target="_blank">my goals this year</a>) and right now I am at the 8.7 miles (14km) mark. Will Smith&#8217;s words hit right on the spot. Whenever I run, there are <a href="http://www.healthmoneysuccess.com/1917/learn-the-art-of-eliminating-negative-self-talk/" target="_blank">inner chatters</a> going through my mind. The little person will give me 101 reasons to stop running and try his best to convince me to stop.</p>
<p>Through frequent training and positive self talk, I manage to ignore the little person that is talking to me and right now I&#8217;m on the right track towards my goal. In life, this little person will appear in your mind too.</p>
<p>It will try to convince you to take the easy way out and give up at signs of hardship. It will tell you that it is hard to be rich, hard to earn promotions or impossible to talk to your dream girl/boy. It will do anything to bring you down and you will have to win this mini battle with this little person in order to grow and succeed.</p>
<p>One way to conquer the little person and negative inner chatter is to run. Running is an effective way for me to deal with this little person and my negative self talk and I bet it can work for you too. As Will Smith said it best, &#8220;You will learn how to not quit when things get hard in your life.&#8221;</p>
<p><em>Note: The first milestone of my marathon is nearing! I have a 10 miles (16km) competition coming this 14th March. I will keep you guys updated and hopefully take some pictures back to share with you.</em></p>
<h3>Reading</h3>
<p>How many books do you read in a month? 1? or none at all? Reading can help us to deal with problems, find solutions, get new ideas that we can use to improve ourselves. It is really important to read and if you truly want to grow and <a href="http://www.healthmoneysuccess.com/767/15-valuable-lessons-we-can-learn-from-world-champions/" target="_blank">succeed in your life</a>.</p>
<p>There are many people using <a href="http://www.healthmoneysuccess.com/1545/excuses-no-more/" target="_blank">excuses</a> like they do not have enough time to read so many books. But why is it there are so many people with the same 24 hours and they can read so many books in a month and yet you can&#8217;t?</p>
<p><strong>There is no lack of time, only a lack of priorities.</strong></p>

<p>I believe many others have allowed others to kill off their dreams. Many people are fearful of going in the opposite direction of where the crowd is going. Hence, the social pressure can make one to give up their dream just for the sake of going with the crowd.</p>
<p>I believe some of you may have faced friends who had failed in their business and tried to convince that you can&#8217;t succeed. Or maybe you have friends who are overweight and think that it is ok to be overweight and convinced you not to make any changes? Maybe there will be people out there who are telling you that blogging is a waste of time?</p>
<p>Are you doing something that is different from others and they are disapproving of it and tell you to stop dreaming?</p>
<p>If so, are you allowing their words to get to you and kill off your dream?</p>

Sometimes we appear to say that we are giving our best but in reality we are not putting in our best effort to get what we want.</p>
<p>When you say that you are going to give your best yet you harbor thoughts that says it is too hard to accomplish something or it will take too much effort or time to do it, most likely you will not be able to give your best effort.<span id="more-1728"></span></p>
<p>In the video clip above taken from Facing The Giants, the team dread the death crawl and it seems to them that 10 yards is the best that they can give. However the coach called up Brock, instructed him to give his best effort and Brock manage to cover almost the whole football field. The coach also blindfolded him so that Brock will not stop until he really gave his best and totally can&#8217;t take it anymore.</p>
<p>When someone is really committed into giving his best, unbelievable results happen. What you think that you can&#8217;t achieve (<a href="http://www.healthmoneysuccess.com/1545/excuses-no-more/" target="_blank">limiting beliefs</a>) became possible when you give your best effort.</p>
<p>What you need to know after watching this video is that most of us are not really giving our best every day. There are limiting beliefs that stop us from giving our best. Many of us can say that we gave our best effort but we don&#8217;t really mean it when we say it.</p>
<p>Saying that you gave your best effort is easy and truly giving your best effort is hard. Make it a point to say what you mean. When you say that you are going to give your best effort, make it happen. Also remember that it isn&#8217;t possible to give your best when all you think about is how hard things is going to be.</p>
<p>Decide now to give your best everyday and be prepared to see unbelievable results happen.</p>

<p>I love the Rocky series. I had recently watched Rocky 1 to 6 and the movie is inspiring. This video was taken from Rocky 6 when Rocky is talking to his son about life. <p>Life isn&#8217;t that easy and everyone have their fair share of obstacles and challenges. There will be times when things just don’t go smoothly for you and everything that can go wrong just went wrong. However these challenges, problems and obstacles can&#8217;t get you down if you don&#8217;t allow it.</p>
<p>Nobody can make you angry, hurt you or make you depress if you do not allow it. Donald Trump was almost bankrupt and came back many times richer. Lance Armstrong fought back cancer and went on to win more championship.</p>
<p>Both of them had faced challenges and obstacles but they <strong>decided that they do not allow life to beat them</strong> to their knees. They got hit hard but they don&#8217;t stop. They just kept on moving forward and that is why <a href="http://www.healthmoneysuccess.com/918/7-failures-that-end-up-successful/" target="_blank">they are winners</a>.</p>

<p>Blaming is self sabotaging. You are not going to get anywhere in life if you have a habit of blaming others for what that had happen to you. Results are what we had personally created. If you are not happy with any part of your life, decide to change and change it.</p>
<p>Don&#8217;t blame others for your scenarios and <strong>no one owe you anything in life</strong>. Choosing not to blame others will also instill power to you. Which means you will not act like a victim and you have the power to turn your life around.</p>

If you do not believe in yourself, most likely you will achieve mediocre results in whatever things that you do. When you believe in something, your mind will automatically search for evidence to support your belief.</p>
<p>If you believe that the iPhone is an awesome product, you will search for evidences to support this particular belief. You may start to find out more functions about the iPhone that is useful to you and the millions of useful apps that you can download.</p>
<p>However if you believe that the iPhone is a lousy product, most likely you will find out evidences that support this belief too. You may find that reception of the iPhone is lousy, the battery life is too short and the camera without a flash can&#8217;t really help you take a good picture.</p>
<p>Whatever you believe in will become your reality. So why not choose to believe in something that is positive and beneficial to you?</p>

<p>Do you know what is your biggest nightmare? What is it that you are really terrified that will happen to you? Are you terrified of being broke for the rest of your life? <p>You may be puzzled about why did I ask you this question. But I believe this may be the question that can help us to get out there and start living and achieving.<span id="more-1474"></span></p>
<h3>Why You Need To Know About Your Biggest Nightmare?</h3>
<p>I once read something by Anthony Robbins which states if you want to achieve success, you will need something to push you away from pain and pull you towards pleasure. When you are constantly moving away from your pain and moving towards pleasure, you are moving forward everyday to achieve success.</p>
<p>Your biggest nightmare in life act as the pain that will push you forward. Most of us avoid the feeling of pain as no one wants to feel painful and suffer from it. However when you find that you are not living the life that you wish to be living, it is time to do something about it. Bring out your biggest nightmare to help push you into action.</p>
<h3>My Biggest Nightmare</h3>
<p>Here are some of my biggest nightmares in life&#8230;</p>
<p>1. Being a nobody for the rest of my life.</p>
<p>2. Doing something that I hate for the rest of my life.</p>
<p>3. Work for 50 years only to find myself died broke.</p>
<p>4. A life of <a href="http://www.healthmoneysuccess.com/1304/how-to-eliminate-mediocrity-from-your-life/" target="_blank">mediocrity.</a></p>
<p>These are the nightmares of my life. If I find myself slacking off, I refer these nightmares and guess what? I jumped into action and start to push forward to achieve my dreams(pleasure) immediately!</p>
<p>Your nightmares can be a great source of motivation.</p>
<p>The worst thing that can happen in our life is to look back and to find that we are capable of achieving better.</p>
<p>How our life turn out totally lies in our hands. If you are not happy with your life right now, go and do something about it. Know your biggest nightmare and use it to push you towards your dreams.</p>

<p>It is hard to maintain motivated everyday and there are bound to be times when we are caught in a slump. This is normal and everybody will have their bad day or period when they just don&#8217;t feel like doing anything. What is important is that we must be able to get out of the slump and keep on moving forward.<span id="more-1406"></span></p>
<p>There will be times when we will stop our exercise routine, stop writing for our blogs or not completing our tasks at work and we may find it hard to resume those work. I went through slumps myself and I had found some ways that work, which may help you to get your butt off the couch and start working again.</p>
<h3>10 Ways To Help You Get Out Of A Slump</h3>
<p><big><strong>1. Stop!</strong></big></p>
<p>When you are caught in a slump, most probably you are gaining new habits which are bad, such as doing unproductive tasks. You need to monitor yourself and see what you are doing differently when you are productive and when you are not productive. Most of the time, you can see that there are some changes to your habits that cause it. So stop and reset yourself, start your day differently by doing the most important things first or minimize your time wasters.</p>
<p><big><strong>2. Be inspired</strong></big></p>
<p>One way to help you spring into action is to get yourself inspired. I find my inspirations from books, podcasts, videos, success stories of others and blogs. Go to youtube and just search for <a href="http://www.healthmoneysuccess.com/212/successful-motivation-speech/" target="_blank">inspirational videos</a>, visit <a href="http://www.ted.com/" target="_blank">TED</a> for talks or visit my <a href="http://www.healthmoneysuccess.com/category/podcast/" target="_blank">podcasts</a> or <a href="http://www.morningcoach.com" target="_blank">MorningCoach.com</a> for personal development podcasts. When you are inspired, you will feel a rush of energy in you to help you start moving forward again.</p>
<p><big><strong>3. Goal</strong></big></p>
<p>If you have the habit of setting goals, it is time to look back at it and see what you had achieved and what you had not. For those goals you had not achieved, look back and reflect why did not achieve your goals and are those goals truly what you want? If you have too many goals for yourself, most likely you will not achieve any of them. Set a single goal for yourself and direct all your energy towards it. This will increase your probability of achieving it.</p>
<p><big><strong>4. Post your goal</strong></big></p>
<p>I used to write down my goals in a book and I find that I usually don&#8217;t achieve them. I found out that if I don&#8217;t see the goal that I had set for myself, I will not achieve it as there is a tendency to forget about it. Nowadays I got a vision board right in front of my working desk that reminds me that I have something to aim for. So every day when I am about to slack off and shift into a slump mode, I will see my goals right in front of me to remind myself to keep working hard for it.</p>
<p>Go write down your goals and if it is possible write it on a very big piece of paper and paste it at somewhere visible. If you can see your goals daily, there will be a constant reminder to tell you to keep working towards it.</p>
<p><big><strong>5. Publicize your goal</strong></big></p>
<p>It can be embarrassing for some people to publicize their goal because they fear that others may laugh at them. You can avoid it by finding your really good friends (if they laugh at your goals, most probably they are not good friends of yours) or online forums where people share the same ideals (personal development forums). When you share your goals with others, it makes you more committed to achieving it and it also help to inculcate a greater sense of responsibility.</p>
<p><big><strong>6. Find a partner</strong></big></p>
<p>As regular readers of my blog, you will know that I always emphasized and encouraged you to find a partner or form a mastermind group to help you move towards your goal. It is really going to help when you have someone beside you to help motivate you and keep you going when you feel like giving up. Go out there and find someone who want to achieve similar goals to you and work hard together towards it. It really does help to increase your motivation.</p>
<p><big><strong>7. Baby steps</strong></big></p>
<p>How do you eat an elephant? One bite at a time. So how do you achieve your goals? One step at a time. Sometimes our goals can be overwhelming and it will do us good if we break down our goals into smaller pieces and start to tackle them bit by bit. If you want to achieve a body to die for, it isn&#8217;t possible to start lifting weights for 4 hours a day. Start by exercising 10 minutes each day and build up your momentum and slowly increase your intensity.</p>
<p><big><strong>8. Momentum</strong></big><strong></strong></p>
<p>If you succeed on carrying out your routine for that day, build up your momentum and keep doing it. We would normally feel good when we have achieve what we want and we need to take that feeling and build on it. Don&#8217;t stop when you are gathering momentum, once you had stopped, you will have to start all over to gather the momentum again.</p>
<p><big><strong>9. Positive thinking</strong></big></p>
<p>Our thoughts are  powerful enough to change our state. If you think about the scenario where you broke up with your girlfriend/boyfriend, most likely your mood will change and you will feel depressed. So when you are working towards your goals, if you harbor negative thoughts most likely you will fall into a depressed state. Be aware of your negative self talk and when you find yourself talking negatively to yourself, stop it and say something that pump you up. Some simple ones such as &#8220;If X can do this, so can I!&#8221; or &#8220;I can do this!&#8221;. You can get yourself excited by taking note of your physiology, start jumping around or pump your fist in the air and shout out something that empower yourself. But do this in somewhere others can&#8217;t see you, or they might start to think that you are crazy. This is something that I do too and even though it sounds weird, it works.</p>
<p><big><strong>10. Get a mentor</strong></big></p>
<p>Find someone who have already reached the places where you want to reach. They can help to anticipate the problems that you will encounter and warn you beforehand and most likely you can pick up valuable knowledge from them too. A mentor can also help to keep you focus on your goal and guide you along the way.</p>

<h3>Mental Barriers</h3>
<p>The above video remind us how Roger Bannister refuse to accept the belief that it is impossible to complete a mile under 4 minutes and finally achieved it. He completed a mile under 4 minutes which no body thought was possible because he relentlessly trained to achieve it without giving regards to the thoughts of others.<span id="more-1290"></span></p>
<p>There are many times when we let down ourselves by listening too much to others. Others may had failed in their ventures and they will tell you that they had tried doing something that doesn&#8217;t work. The worst scenario is that we believe so strongly in them and adopt their negative mindset which create huge obstacles for ourselves.</p>
<h3>Beliefs are not 100% true</h3>
<p>I believe many of us will hear about running a business is hard, creating an online business is just a scam and the stock market is only for the rich. These are just <a href="http://www.healthmoneysuccess.com/333/how-changing-your-beliefs-can-bring-you-success-part-1/" target="_blank">beliefs</a> of others that had previously failed and did not try again to make it work. Why am I so sure about it? Because I see others have created successful businesses, there are successful online business being created and there are also people who start out from nothing and <a href="http://www.healthmoneysuccess.com/319/successful-millionaire/" target="_blank">got rich</a> by investing in the stock market.</p>
<p>If you are procrastinating on doing something that you truly love and believe that it will work, why let others stop you from doing it? Others may not have even walk down the path that you intended to walk and they may just be telling you that it is not possible because they <a href="http://www.healthmoneysuccess.com/918/7-failures-that-end-up-successful/" target="_blank">failed to achieve</a> it or they are telling you what they have heard in the cafe. Can you even believe in the chatters that they had overheard in the cafe?</p>
<p>If you want to do something but others are telling you not to do it, first of all, look for <a href="http://www.healthmoneysuccess.com/586/how-to-achieve-success-in-everything/" target="_blank">successful evidences.</a> If there are others who have walked down the path you intended to walk and succeeded, it means that what you plan on doing is possible. The second step you would need to do is to seek them out and learn from them. Tap into their brain and know what is the blueprint for their success. Their knowledge will help you to cut short your learning curve.</p>
<h3>Parting Words</h3>
<p>Even if you plan on doing something that no others had succeeded, such as the example of Roger Bannister, you can always try it out and see how it goes. If Thomas Edison and the Wright brothers have never tried to create the light bulb and build the air plane respectively, we will not have the luxury of having light in our house at night or traveling to other countries by plane.</p>
<p>Do not allow beliefs of others to stop you from doing what you want to do. If you want to know whether anything will work out, the only way for you to verify it is to take action and do it. I hope you pick up something from this article and the most important lesson of today is to remember that you are your biggest obstacle and choose carefully who to listen to.</p>
