Are you smiling when you are watching this video? I did! It seems like they are enjoying their mini concert and this lead me to think about the need to enjoy ourselves.

As we grew older, it seems like we are putting more and more restrictions on ourselves. These restrictions then cause us to stop enjoying ourselves as much as when we were young. We also tend to worry much more about image and that stop us from doing lots of things. Take a look at the kids around you, they sure know how to enjoy themselves. Give them some toys and they can imagine that they are flying a plane or fighting a monster and all this while they are truly enjoying themselves with their imaginations.

Difference Between Adult and Kids

When a kid saw a puddle of water, they may jump and stomp on it. Even though they are getting dirty, you can look at the smile on their face and their laughter. It is totally real and they are really enjoying what they are doing.

But what if an adult saw a puddle of water? The first thing they would do is to stare at it, give a frustrated look and walk around it. That is not all! The adult will then start to complain and bitch about why is that puddle of water in front of them after walking away. Can you see the difference?

I had once read from a book that kids are good teachers and adults should learn more from them. It is true because as we grew up, we forgot about little things in life that are important. Have you forgotten about the little things in life? Have you buried yourself in the hectic pace of the society and forgot all about enjoying yourself?

Cheers,
Vincent

I had received comments from readers that they prefer to have a list that teaches them how to be happy instead of being miserable. So I created this article that contains tips to teach you how to be happy.

Living In The Past

Have you ever met some people who love to talk to you about their past and they will start telling you about how great they were during those time? Sometimes it can be interesting to listen to their stories but when they start to boast about it a bit too frequently, it can turn out to be rather irritating.

Normally, those people who like to boast about their past are not as successful now as compared to them in the past. I believe that they are basking in their past glories as it helps them to feel better about themselves and it also give them a certain value of self worth.

The problem is, hanging on to their past achievements in this case will not help them as they are only living in the past and not trying to move forward in life. Their past achievements now acts only as dead weights hanging on to them to slow down their movements.

Looking Back In The Past

When I was studying in my secondary school (I believe it is middle school in US), I love sports and one of my favorite sports is basketball. I was playing the game for almost everyday and I also actively participated in sport events such as track and field and cross country events. I wasn’t too bad at sports and I won quite a few trophies during those time.

After I had graduated from secondary school, I became rather inactive and I did not continue playing basketball or picked up any new sports. However I couldn’t let go of my past achievements in sports and I found myself constantly talking about it.

The past became my comfort zone.

When there are any conversation regarding about sports, somehow I will manage to talk about my past achievements. Whenever I talked about my past glories, I felt great. Even though the feeling was good, deep down in my heart I knew that I wasn’t happy at the present moment because I did not have any new achievements to be proud of.

It was until one fine day when I am thinking to myself, “Why am I bragging so much about my past achievements? Am I successful now and do I have any new achievement that I am proud of?”

When I thought about this question, I was suddenly awakened and I knew that I am not happy about myself at that moment as I am not achieving as much as I would like to and I am only keeping those past memories as a way to make myself feel better. All those time I am only sitting in my own comfort zone which is in the past and I can only bask in my past glories.

I knew that in order for me to achieve new achievements in life, I need to let go of my past achievements and strive to achieve new ones. Even though it is hard to let go, I decided to cast aside my achievements in the past and focus on getting new ones.

I had read books that mentioned that our past success can help to inspire us to achieve other new success in life but somehow this time round I found that my past successes are hindering me instead. It seems like letting go of them will be the wiser choice this time.

I decided to throw away off my trophies and medals and not to brag about my past anymore.

What Happened Next

So what do you think happened after I threw away my trophies and medals which are my physical attachments to the past?

One thing for sure is that I got a lot more room for myself and less clutters, both physically and mentally. Another thing was I felt insecure as I do not have any past achievements to lean back on. This cause me to think a lot more harder on how to achieve new achievements. When I was brain storming for what I can achieve, I felt happy and excited about all the possibilities that could happen.

The dead weights were removed and I had seen a huge amount of possibilities in front of me and I couldn’t wait to achieve them. My life started to improve since I had let go of the my past achievements. I started to be more in the present and I continue to accumulate new achievements. I am enjoying every moment of the present right now. I did not know that chasing after new goals can be that exciting and it is definitely much more better than living in the past.

Your Turn

So are you holding on to something of your past that doesn’t help you? Are you living in the present or the past? There are a lot more possibilities by letting go of the past and living in the present. If your past doesn’t help you to achieve more in life, let it go and focus your energy in the present to achieve new heights in your life.

To your success,
Vincent
Enjoying the present

Gratitude

Gratitude is a simple act of showing appreciation and being thankful. It doesn’t take up a lot of our time or effort to be thankful but why is it that people are not showing appreciation for the things that they are receiving in life? Do you say thank you to your parents/spouse whenever they make you your meals or when they cover you up with blankets?

When we are accustomed to things that seem to happen frequently and naturally, we wouldn’t show much appreciation to it.. Gradually we will take things for granted and grow accustomed to receiving benefits from others without being thankful.

Why Show Gratitude When We Can Be Selfish?

It is true that even when we are not showing gratitude, there is nothing that can hurt us directly but showing gratitude does has it benefits. Here is one research done by others that prove that showing gratitude does have benefits.

-Rind and Bordia found that restaurant patrons gave bigger tips when their servers wrote “Thank you” on their checks.
- Facts from Wikipedia

This is just a simple act of showing appreciation to customers attending to their restaurant and they got a positive result out of it. Is it even hard to write a thank you note or even say thank you?

By showing gratitude, we are focusing our mind on things that are pleasant in our life and it also help to bring our mind back to the present moment. It will also help to sharpen our awareness so that we can appreciate things that are happening around us which we fail to notice in the past. All these factors then ultimately help to increase our level of happiness.

By slowly cultivating the habit of being grateful, we will gradually become a more positive person with positive attitude instead of someone who complained about everything about life. One more bonus about being grateful is it doesn’t only help to make us happier. It help people around you to be happier and you will attract more friends as a result.

How To Show Gratitude And Be Happier

1. Be aware

Be aware of little things happening around you. Whenever someone did a small act of kindness for you, return the favor by saying thank you. A smile will definitely make it more sincere.

2. Privilege, not entitlement

Sometime we often have the mentality that we are entitled to little things in life. This cause us to be ungrateful and think that things should happen in a certain way for us. Life doesn’t work that way. We need to learn that what we have is a privilege to us and we should be grateful for things that we had received.

3. Stay in the present

By staying in the present, we appreciate what we have now instead of feeling frustrated over what we don’t have. Whenever our mind start to think about what we lack, it goes into a “future mode” which will bring us frustrations and anger. By staying in the present, we can savor the moments in life and enjoy the beauty of the present.

Bonus point

Keep a gratitude journal and note down what are some of the things you are grateful for and keep on adding to it everyday. It is definitely a great way to constantly remind ourselves of what we have now and be grateful for it. Start showing gratitude and you will immediately feel that the world is a better place to live in.

Cheers

Seminars are good ways to learn new information but there is a tendency that even though you did a fire walk or jump off the cliff at the seminar, you are still the same person as yesterday because I believe that you can’t change into a better person in a day. So I decided to buy the audio program as I believe that it will be good to have a mentor always near me, constantly teaching and reminding me, so I can change myself bit by bit.

Andrew Matthews audio program talks about how to achieve happiness, drawing power from your subconscious mind, having good relationships, prosperity, personal power and developing action plan towards your success. There is a total of 144 useful strategies in it and I will share with you some of the ideas I got from his audio program. I am going to talk about two points that was mentioned in his “144 Strategies for Success and Happiness” which is Happiness and Worrying.

Happiness

What is more important than being happy? If you ask around people what they want, most of them either want to be happy or want to be rich. If you ask why they want to be rich, they will answer that I will be happy if I am rich. Ultimately in life, what we want to achieve is to be happy.

Why are we not happy?

Some people say they are not happy because they are old, young, poor, unhealthy, feel they are not appealing or think that when they meet someone special, then they will be happy. There are people who went through the same situations like us or maybe worst, but they are still happy. Why? Because they knew that they can choose to be happy and happiness is a choice. It is a decision.

We don’t depend on others to make us happy. What makes you think that when you are miserable and depressed, there will be people who will come to you and say they want to spend their whole life with you. You will think that they are crazy. We need to work on ourselves first and be happy before we can attract others into our life and be happy together.

Happiness is a daily decision, it is a choice.

Why do you lose your temper at your family members more easily compared to losing your temper towards your friends? Because we choose our emotions depending on the situation. Happiness is a choice that we can make.

Strategy

Make it a motto to choose to be happy by saying this every morning, “Today I choose to be happy regardless of any situation. This is my day, my 24 hours and I choose to be happy.”

Worrying

We worry about lots of things in life. We worry about whether will we be rich, will we be healthy, will there be any groceries left in the store or are we still sexy. Excessive worrying attract misfortunes and is detrimental to our health. So true about the phrase “worrying ourselves sick”.

Worrying comes from our thoughts. This means that we can stop worrying because we can control our thoughts. Some people may say that, “I can’t help what I think.” If you cannot help what you think, then who can? It is our own brain and we have control over it.

How to stop worrying

Stay in the present and take action.

Let’s take an example.

You need to pay your landlord a thousand dollars by Saturday and today is Monday. You can keep worrying and let worrying inhibit you to take action or you can choose to forgo your worries and do what is necessary at the present moment. You can choose to take action by calling up your friends or get an extra part time work to earn more money. When it is Friday, if you still don’t have the money to pay your landlord, it is Ok. Saturday is the day to pay the rent and in the present you have no problem. You postpone your worries and do whatever you can in the present. If by Saturday, you either have enough money to pay your land lord or not enough. If you can pay your landlord, then you can stay. If you can’t, you leave. It will be a little more inconvenient to pack your stuff and find temporary accommodation but you still survive!

Strategy

Procrastinate your worries.

Make it your life motto, “I do what I can in the present, I don’t worry about the future. Right this second, there is no problem.”

Everyone will have their fair share of crisis in life and we can deal with it moment by moment. It is only thinking negatively into the future that cause us troubles. Have there been any situation that you did not survive in the present? it is only thinking negatively about the future that cause us to worry and start to attract all the misfortunes to us.

So always remember that we can choose to be happy in life and we can choose to procrastinate worries and do what we can at the present.
