Michael Jordan

If we want to achieve great results and be successful in life, we need to learn from those who had been there and done that. Michael Jordan has the qualities to be successful and he is definitely a great role model that we can learn from.

Michael Jordan is a guy who was cut out of his varsity basketball team because he was deemed too short to play at 1.8 meter but he turned out to be highly successful in his basketball career and was known as a legend in the game.

He had showed the mental toughness to bounce back from failure and here are 7 lessons we can learn from him.

7 Lessons We Can Learn From Michael Jordan

1. Our Own Expectation

“You have to expect things of yourself before you can do them.”
Michael Jordan

A common trait between the successful people in life is that they always have high expectations of themselves. We may say that this is one of the core attributes that we need in order to achieve success. When we expect a certain standard of ourselves, regardless of high or low, we will fall into them naturally.

Michael Jordan expect himself to be the best in the game, that is why he spent countless hours practicing to bring out the best in him. He can definitely cut back on his practice hours and spend his time on other activities but his expectation of himself to be the best doesn’t allow it.

2. Do not fear failure

“I’ve missed more than 9000 shots in my career. I’ve lost almost 300 games. 26 times, I’ve been trusted to take the game winning shot and missed. I’ve failed over and over and over again in my life. And that is why I succeed.”
Michael Jordan

Most people are afraid of failing. They are so fearful of failure that it halt all their action but the funny thing in life is that if we do not take any action, we are doom for failure. Contradicting isn’t it?

Failure is part of success. We can actually perceive failure as a feedback and the feedback works as a reminder to tell us something is wrong and we need to fix it. Failure doesn’t condemn us, it is just Nature’s way of telling us to fix something that isn’t right.

3. Just Try

“I can accept failure, everyone fails at something. But I can’t accept not trying.”
Michael Jordan

We won’t know the results until we give it a try and that is why we must always try something before we come out with 101 reasons of why we can’t do it. There will be obstacles along the journey when you are trying to achieve results, but don’t let those obstacles stop you from trying. Everyone has their fair share of obstacles and obstacles are meant to be conquered.

4. Don’t Give Up

Michael Jordan never give up and that is why he is being regarded as a legend in the basketball game and not a drop out of the varsity basketball team. He was cut from the varsity team but that doesn’t mean the end of his dream. Instead of whining and complaining, he doubled his effort in training and made it into his varsity roster.

5. Hard Work

“I’ve always believed that if you put in the work, the results will come. ”
Michael Jordan

There isn’t any successful people in the world that don’t put in hard work to achieve what they have today. In order to collect your harvest, you need to put in the effort to sow first. That is the Law of Nature. If we want to achieve something, just put in the hard work and the results will definitely come.

6. Make Things Happen

“Some people want it to happen, some wish it would happen, others make it happen.”
Michael Jordan

Dreaming allow us to think of the wonderful possibilities that can happen to us but a dream is just a dream. We can spend all day long day dreaming and wish things could happen but things won’t happen without us lifting a finger. Dreams are there to inspire us but don’t just wish that something would happen, make it happen by taking massive action.

7. Passion

“Even when I’m old and grey, I won’t be able to play it, but I’ll still love the game.”
Michael Jordan

It is hard to be successful in things that you do not have passion in because it tends to bore you in the long run. People who are highly successful today have great passion in the things they do. Donald Trump love to close his deals, Warren Buffett love to invest and would tap dance to work everyday and Michael Jordan just love his game.

Find things that excite you and strive to achieve excellent results in it. You will find it a lot more easier to be successful in that field because your passion will help to lift you even when the chips are down.

Parting Words

There are lots of role model in this world that we can learn from and Michael Jordan is one of them. He had shown us that achieving is possible and all we need is to believe in our own capabilities, don’t be fearful of failure and work hard to achieve results. If you want to achieve more out of your life, the teachings of the 7 lessons above will definitely help.

I love the quote too. It is inspiring and it never fail to motivate me to keep on trying whenever I meet any failure.

    @The A-Hole Guru

Haha! I had a crack at that one. I saw him play when he is in the Wizard team and I still think his performance is great even though he can’t dominate his opponent using his physical ability. But it is still entertaining to watch him play and I totally admire his courage for coming back to play at that age.

Everyone have the tools and resources to succeed. All we need to do is to utilize them effectively and persevere. Do share with others that you think will benefit from this article. I hope they can get something out of the article too.

  6. I love this post.

Everything you listed here I subscribe to. I talk to many people about success and how to get it. I know I’m not where I want to be but I KNOW I will be there someday. People are always on the outside looking in and not realizing that they have all the tools to be just as successful as any other person.

Even those born with special gifts must have passion, perserverance and discipline to be able to put it to use.

I will definitely be passing thtis on to my coworkers in the productivity emails I send.

  7. You forgot #8: Punch your teammates in the face at practice to increase their motivation.

Heh, big fan. Even during the Wizard years. Actually moreso, because he couldn’t use his athletic ability to dominate.

  8. Great post Vincent. I personally like Michael Jordan a lot too (I’ve caught his movie Space Jam as well!). This quote which you shared in your article is my all time favorite: “I’ve missed more than 9000 shots in my career. I’ve lost almost 300 games. 26 times, I’ve been trusted to take the game winning shot and missed. I’ve failed over and over and over again in my life. And that is why I succeed.” It has also been used in a Nike advert which is one of my favorite ads: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=45mMioJ5szc

  9. Its definitely important to be passionate about something, I always say that if you do not love or enjoy what you are doing, the quality of your work is going downhill. I really like how there is a Jordan quote for each and every one of the lessons. I think this quote specifically, “I’ve missed more than 9000 shots in my career. I’ve lost almost 300 games. 26 times, I’ve been trusted to take the game winning shot and missed. I’ve failed over and over and over again in my life. And that is why I succeed, shows that Michael is not afraid to state the degree and caliber of his prior failures, this shows humility and honesty two other great characteristics.

  10. These are absolutely wonderful lessons. I love the ideas of trying hard and not giving up. We have to believe in our abilities and work hard to achieve our dreams!
