Stay Focused

In businesses, regardless of whether we are operating as a team or as an individual, we need to be very clear of the outcomes that we want. These outcomes are objectives that we must meet in order to turn the business into a success.

It is the same In our personal life, we need to be clear of what are the outcomes that we want in order to achieve success. If we do not have a clear outcome of what we want to strive for, we will just end up where the river flows and where the river ended up may not be where we want to go.

Distractions

Even when we know what outcomes or results we are striving for, there are still many people that allow themselves to take their eyes off the ball and this result in them diverted from their outcomes.

Distractions are something that we must conquer if we want to get things done and get the desirable results that we wanted. Imagine there are 2 limo drivers driving to the same destination and driver A stops for every 5 minutes because whenever something caught his attention, he will get down from this car and take a look at it. Driver B kept driving to his destination regardless of any distraction that happened during the journey.

Which driver will reach the destination first? Definitely driver B because there isn’t a single time where he took his eyes off the goal which is to reach the destination in the shortest time possible. Can you imagine the frustration of the passenger sitting in car A?

10 Tips To Help You Stay Focused

1. Know your distractions

Take out a pen and a piece of paper and write down your task that you are doing everyday in your job. Compare all the tasks that you had written down with the objectives that you are supposed to fulfill in your job and eliminate or delegate tasks that does not align with those objectives. This will help you to be more productive and efficient in your work.

2. Learn to say no

There are times when your colleagues will throw down extra piles of work for you or your friends will call you for a chat when you are working. This is when you will need to learn to say no. If your friend is just calling you for a normal chit chat session during your work time, it is best to inform him/her that you will call them back later instead of chatting with them for hours without getting any work done.

It can be hard to refuse to help your colleague with their work when they request for help but if you can’t cope with your own work in the first place, it is best to say no to them and hope they can understand your situation.

3. Adequate Sleep

It is hard to focus when you are sleepy or stressful due to lack of sleep. Sacrificing some late night movies and grabbing an extra hour of sleep will help to keep you alert for the day.

4. Minimize Distractions

If you are working in an environment where there are lots of distractions (e.g. noise) you can try to minimize the distractions by listening to your iPod or any other music player.

5. To Do list

A to do list help to keep you on track and the system of one task leading to another is an effective way of getting things done. I had written an article on single tasking and you may want to read it for more information on getting things done.

6. Don’t Go Hungry

Don’t go hungry when you are rushing for a deadline as this can be counter productive. Maintain your sugar level by snacking on healthy food (e.g. fruits instead of chocolates) at regular intervals. I set a standard time of snacking at 10pm and 3pm so that I won’t feel hungry. This routine has help me to maintain my focus for a longer period of time.

7. Take regular breaks

Taking regular breaks will help you to refresh your mind and maintain focus. I take a short break whenever I am done with 1 hour and 30 minutes of work and it does helps to keep me refreshed.

8. Think of The Benefits

If you know your outcomes and you are striving towards it, you can maintain your focus by knowing the benefits when you achieve the outcome. By playing a mental image of the benefits you will get after achieving your desired outcomes will help to get you motivated to work on the task.

9. Have a Purpose

A car can’t run without fuel and we can’t achieve excellent results when we don’t have a purpose. Your purpose is a reason that is big enough that will help to push you further. Once you have found the reason that is big enough for you to take consistent action, achieving your desired outcome is almost inevitable.

10. Reward Yourself

Rewarding yourself when you reach your mini milestones is a great way to keep you motivated and also help in maintaining your focus. Go to a good restaurant to have your lunch or have an ice cream after a week of great workout will help you to keep your motivation burning.

Parting Words

Staying focused is just like a laser beam zooming on its target. Without it, we will just be running around in circles without achieving anything in the end. Create good habits that help you to maintain your focus and you will be able to achieve great results in life.

    Hi!
    Thank you for sharing this tips. I need to focus on doing my next project…
    See you around.

  2. Thinks for the tips :)

    Indeed, when you are driving a vehicle and lose control, in that moment what you
    focus on (rather it be the brick wall, the cars in the other lane, the tree, or the
    clear safe area), the mind will automatically turn the steering-wheel and
    drive towards your focus. The same is true for anything you focus on.

    One way to focus on what you desire, is to teach it. When teaching, you
    continuously repeat yourself. Through repetition you learn what you teach.
    First you learn it, then you remember it. Eventually you will remember it to
    the point of automatically and subconsciously being/ doing what you teach.
    Hence why we are inspired to share something newly discovered.

    :)

    @Hi Lunaticg,

    You are welcome. :)

    @Hi Nicholas,

    Teaching may help us to recall and focus on what we had learned before. It can be great if we want to ensure that we had learned and understood the subject completely.

    It’s not easy to say no, I realize. I feel somewhat guilty if I can’t help everyone. But I know that if I don’t do that, I’ll end up feeling overwhelmed and unable to complete my own work. Thanks for your tips!

    @Hi Evelyn,

    I do agree that it can be hard at times to reject helping others but as what you said, it can be kind of overwhelming if we try to help out everyone and end up not completing our own work.

    solid list – really cool to see these all in one place and realise how they’re intereconnected.

    taking care of yourself via sleep and not going hungry are important and often forgotten.

    most importantly i really like that you focus on purpose and thinking of the benefits.

    one thought that always gets me away from distractions is to ask myself, “Do i want this?” – redirects your focus to what’s important.

    solid stuff
