Why Do You Need Disasters?

Most of the time, when we start to learn new things is when disaster strike. If you are eating junk food and you are still healthy, will you suddenly stop eating junk foods altogether? Most probably not.

What if the doctor say that the junk foods are causing you to have a higher risk of cardiovascular disease and you will die soon if you don’t quit eating junk food now? Your state of mind will totally different and suddenly you are so motivated to adopt a healthy lifestyle and junk foods are immediately strike out of your diet.

Human don’t embrace change, if anything is new and unfamiliar to us, our normal reaction would be to move away from it. It is only when disasters strike and we are smacked right in the face by Life then we will start to take action. In school, we only start studying after we know we are failing. In work, only when you see that your company is retrenching then you start to work doubly hard and find ways to upgrade your skills. How about praying? When do you start to pray? You start to pray doubly hard when you have unfortunate events in your life and you want a turnaround FAST.

The Most Effective Way To Learn

Success is not a good teacher. What do you normally do after you had success? You give yourself a pat on your back and celebrate. It is also common to see people reach a certain level of success and start to be complacent and complacency is a wonderful strategy for failure.

We start to learn better when things get a little rough. We normally make the most important decision after setbacks and failures. Failures are the feedback to us that hurts and we will notice it more easily and take the necessary actions to rectify it. Failure. is a good teacher that will provide us with education.

Do I need to go around looking for disaster?

No! That is not the point. You do not need to go around looking for disaster to teach you a lesson or two. When you are given a nudge by Life, take note of it and ask yourself what do you need to do to change for better or improve your current situation. When you do not take note of the nudge by Life, beware of the boulder that Life is going to throw at you.

Lessons You Learned

Life is a series of lessons. It can be painful only when you start to ignore the gentle signs that it is giving you. Ignorant is never bliss. Always be conscious about what is happening to you and around you. Are you feeling miserable everyday. Are you always broke? Are you visiting the doc every few weeks. These are the small nudges that Life had given you and it is reminding you that something in your life is not right and you must do something about it.

If you ignore the gentle nudge from Life, you will soon find that Life will throw you a bigger lesson to you and that is where the real crisis will happen. Major crisis such as facing bankruptcy or landed in a hospital bed.

Lessons are presented to you again and again until you learn your lessons. You can either take the responsibility to take charge of your life or be a victim. Take charge and learn from every event that had happened in your life. See the need for the event to happen and conquer it, so that Life does not throw you the same lessons anymore.

So are you aware of the lessons presented to you by life?

  1. @Hi Clinton,

Henry Ford is definitely a great role model that we could learn from. The key is not to give up in face of adversity, only those who learn from their mistakes and be persistence in their pursuit of success will eventually achieve it.

  2. Hey Jared,
I agree there. People DO spend a lot of time complain about the past. Some of the popular ones are, “ah I should of invested in oil back in 19…” or “Should of never got into that, look at all the money I lost..damn…”. Thing is, these people are still making the same mistakes at this very moment, and in 10 years they’ll complain about what they should of done now.

Kind of crazy how so many people are that shallow. If you focus on the negatives and dwell on them, you’ll only become weaker. The exact opposite of what failure is suppose to do for you. “What doesn’t kill you only makes you stronger.”

It’s true that failure is one of the best teachers. Think of how vulnerable you’d be if you never failed at something. How easy would it be to “nudge” you off the edge if you haven’t fallen before. Success also teaches a great lesson. It teaches you why you’re doing what you’re doing.

“If you ignore the gentle nudge from Life, you will soon find that Life will throw you a bigger lesson to you and that is where the real crisis will happen. Major crisis such as facing bankruptcy or landed in a hospital bed.”

This makes a lot of sense. How are you going to deal with life’s pressures unless you know what can go wrong and how to prevent it? To gain such knowledge you must have failed before. Henry Ford failed five times before making a success. Sad to say, most of us would quit the first or second time. His reward for his persistence was a company that outlived him for two life times.

Awesome post! Love your blog mor and more every post I read!

  4. Failure and danger is a powerful wake up call in life.
From suffering, I learn to become stronger. I have developed my study skills and learned about personal finance. Now it’s time to rule the world!

  5. Hi Raymond,

I believe having both success and failure in life is important. Failures allow us to learn from our mistakes where as success let us celebrate our triumphs and also letting us learn what works, so that we can adhere to it.

  6. I benefit a lot from both my success and failure.

I celebrate my success and learn from my failure and I really think that we need both of them to live in a complete life. What do you think?

  7. Hi Jared,

If we look at the positive learning experience after a setback, we will find that we had learned so much things and these are the things we can only learn through adversity.

Always look on the bright side of life! 😉

  8. It is so true how adversity makes us so much stronger. Unfortunately, most people only focus on the negatives of a “disaster” long after it has passed. But if instead we look at the positive learning experiences while going through those difficult times, we would be much better able to handle a similar situation if it happened again in the future.
