Your Life Is Like A Cup Of Water And Why You Need To Know This

your life is like a cup of water personal development

It’s not the daily increase but daily decrease. Hack away at the unessential.

~Bruce Lee

The way to achieve personal excellence is to do something that you had never done before. This means making changes to your life by doing something different to get different results.

Why You Should Have A “Start Doing List”

I talked about brainstorming for ways to achieve your goals in the Ultimate Goal Setting Guide. Brainstorming is a method that you can use to think about strategies and steps to help you get to your goals.

It is a great way to create a list of tasks that you should start doing. Without this list, you will be lost because you do not know where to start.

I believe everyone should have a Start Doing List of tasks that they created themselves. This is the first step to making significant changes in life.

However, most people can’t get themselves to work on this list. This is because they do not have a equilibrium that is balance.

Why You Need To Know About Equilibrium And How It Can Affect Your Life

I didn’t think that the knowledge of equilibrium is so important before. However, I came to realize that it is indeed important and everyone pursuing personal excellence should know this as it would help you to make your journey a much smoother one.

The quote by Bruce Lee sums it well.

It’s not the daily increase but daily decrease. Hack away at the unessential.

Think of a cup of water. When the cup is filled with dirty water, there will be no clean water for drinking. What will come out of the cup will be dirty unless you add clean water into it.

However, the dirty water has to be cleared in order to make space for the clean water. This is The Law Of Equilibrium.

The Law Of Equilibrium applies to our life too.

You will have the opportunity to make a difference in your life when you have a Start Doing List. However, you won’t be able to make any changes unless you clear the dirty water out of your life.

Let’s say that you want to lose weight. You created a Start Doing List that includes waking up early, exercising and eating a clean diet.

These new tasks have no place to go unless you make space for them. Your time is limited and you only have 24 hours in a day. You can’t slot in anything new in your life if you do not have space for them.

The Solution: Stop Doing List

If you have a list of things that you want to start doing, you need to have a list of things that you have to stop doing to maintain equilibrium.

You can’t have a clean diet unless you give up on your favorite donuts. You won’t have time to exercise unless you stop watching every re-run of The American Idol. You won’t be able to wake up early to go for a morning run if you are not able to stop sleeping late.

Once you know the importance of hacking away the unessential by using a Stop Doing List, you will be able to fill in your life with clean water (things, habits or tasks that will make changes to your life).

It isn’t easy to stop doing something that you have been doing for so long and nobody says that it is easy in the first place. However, once you have a good habit in place, it is just as hard to get rid of a good habit as well as a bad habit.

If you decided that you want to start adding life changing tasks into your life, first you need to decide to hack away the unessential to make space for them. This is the only way that you can see accelerated growth.

So what is it that you want to stop doing in order to create space for what you want to do?

Great insight! We should all examine what we do on a daily basis which isn’t on our todo list, but actually preventing us spending enough time on our start-doing list.

  2. Hi Vincent,
I am visiting your blog for the first time. Nice to meet you.

I really enjoyed your post. Sadly, most people don’t understand that they must get rid of old habits first, before they can start new ones. People want it all and they want it now, but it dosen’t work that way, if one want change he must make room first, and then he can expect change.

      Hi Daniel,

Thanks for dropping by. I agree too. It is just like trying to wake up early while keeping the habit of sleeping late. It is not sustainable and it is like setting ourselves up for failure.
