Do You Give Up Easily?

This is a great video about Nick Vujicic that can serve us as an inspiration. After seeing this video, what are the feelings that come to you immediately? Felt amazed? Sympathy? Sad or Inspired? I hope you felt inspired by the video as I believe Nick want to use his story to inspire others rather than having others to pity him.

There are some lessons that we can learn from him, let me elaborate more on it.

Giving Up

Do you give up easily? Do you happen to give up almost immediately when failures and obstacles come knocking on your door? Did that happen before? I bet it does, I was guilty of it too. After seeing how Nick overcome his obstacles in life, we need to remind ourselves that regardless of what obstacles we face, we cannot give up easily and we need to keep on moving forward.

7 tips for overcoming obstacles

1. Know what is the obstacle - The first thing would be to identify what is the obstacle. After identifying the obstacle, we need to determine whether the obstacle is in our circle of influence or outside of it. Things outside of our circle of influence are events that we can’t control. Some examples such as the weather, the headlines on the newspaper or war. Nick’s obstacle that is outside of his circle of influence would be his lack of limbs. There are no reasons for us to worry about things that we can’t change. Instead we should focus only on things that are inside our circle of influence which can be change by our effort. Examples: Smoking, attitude, or bad habits.

2. Focus on overcoming - When we are facing obstacles, the worst thing we can do is to focus on the obstacle. The more we dwell on it, the more depress we are. We should choose to focus on how are going to overcome it and visualize the image of us conquering the obstacles. Think about the benefits you will enjoy if you had conquered your obstacle. The feeling you would get from it would be wonderful.

3. Bring out the best of what you have - Think of what you have and try to bring out the best of it. Nick have a body and a little foot and he tried hard to bring out what he can do with them. Don’t think so much about your shortcomings if you can’t change it. Brain storm for your strengths instead and develop them further.

4. Short breaks - Take a rest if you must but don’t you ever quit. If overcoming the obstacle is so tiring and you have really exhausted yourself, take a break. Rest and rejuvenate yourself before going on again. Give your mind a needed mental break and your mind will be back to a level where it can work at it’s peak.

5. Don’t listen to others who failed - There may be people who went through the exact situation like you before and failed. Don’t ever let them pollute your mind when they start to give you lectures on “you can’t do this because I can’t do that” talk. Don’t ever let people bring you down to their level. What they can’t do doesn’t mean that you can’t.

6. Support group - Is it too tiring to face the problem by yourself? Find someone you can trust and talk to them about it. Two brains are better than one, and maybe they can see things in different angles that will provide you with a better insight.

7. Keep trying - If one of your strategy to conquer your obstacle is not working, don’t give up immediately. Modify your strategy and try again. It can be frustrating when you fall, but you should always get back up. There are many people who fall, but those that pick themselves up after falling are those who are bound for success.

There are always happiness after sadness as there are sunrise after sunset. You may be in darkness now but be determined to find a way to overcome and conquer your challenges and you will see the light after darkness.  I believe you can.

Hi Vincent, you’ve got a great article here! I’ve to admit I’d been guilty of giving up too easily in the past. I never knew how to stick to the gun to accomplish something until I realised what was my obstacle.

My obstacle was that I had no passion and purpose in the things I did. Because of that, I had no drive, no motivation and no determination to get things done.

Now that I’ve found my passion and the purpose in doing it, I tell myself that nothing’s going to hold me down, at least not for long. Now, I can’t even imagine myself giving up!

I can see that you’ve put in a lot of effort in providing value to other people thru’ your blog and I wish you all the best.

    Keep up the good work!

    Cheers~
