What Is The Best Thing To Do When Life Hits You With A Giant Hammer

how to deal with obstacles

Life is like a game of poker. You have no control over the cards you are dealt with but you have absolute control on how to play the game with the cards in hand.

Everyone has their fair share of obstacles, troubles and frustrations. However, these are not as important as compared to how you are going to deal with the situation.

Dealing With Obstacles Sucks And Why You Are Wrong About It

I used to feel negative about obstacles, or so called challenges. I would rather choose to have a smooth sailing journey as compared to one full of “challenges”. Everyone wants an easy way out, isn’t it true?

However, this mindset got me into a negative state of mind easily. Whenever life chooses to hit me with a hammer and block me from going to where I want to be, I whined about it.

I also played the “if game”, which I think to myself – if this did not happen, I will have more success, if I have more time, if I have more money, if I am able to get/have more ___ …. blah blah blah. If my dad is the president, I probably don’t even need to face these obstacles now. Yeah, pray (really hard) for it.

I focused more on the obstacles rather than the solution. This is a killer because the more I focus on the obstacles, the longer I got stuck with the obstacles. What you focus on expands.

To get rid of your obstacles fast, you need to reframe your perception of obstacles. Whatever challenges that you face, you need to think of it as an opportunity to learn something new.

When your products don’t sell, you know that you will learn what don’t sell well and what you can do to improve it.

When you fail to lose weight, you know you are about to learn something new about what type of diet and lifestyle doesn’t work and what works.

When you face obstacles, see it as a moment where you are going to learn something new to make a breakthrough. It is this “Aha” moment that will push you to the next level.

When I start to think in this way, obstacles and frustrations doesn’t seem that negative to me. I don’t go chasing for obstacles or frustrations, but I know how to handle the situation when life hits me with a hammer. I know I am about to learn something new that will bring me to the next level.

What Are You Focusing On Makes A Huge Difference

If you focus on the negative, you become weak and powerless. In this state of mind, you are not able to perform at a higher level. This results in more frustration and anger.

Whenever obstacles appear in your life, redirect your focus to the solution.

Focusing on the solution gives you power. When you feel you are able to take action and change your reality, you are empowered and you function at a higher level.

In this positive state, you can solve problems easier and take massive action to make changes.

If you are broke, focus on how you are going to earn extra income instead of worrying about the fact that you are broke. Worrying about how much money you have left in your bank isn’t going to get you anywhere. However, you will make a huge difference in your life if you are able to redirect your focus to find ways to earn more streams of income.

Think about a compass. If you want to keep walking North, you focus on where the needle is pointing towards and you walk in that direction. You don’t try to walk towards North and focus on where the needle in the compass is not pointing to (South, East and West).

Homework For The Day

Think about the areas of your life where making some changes there will make a huge difference in your life. Is it that you want to lose weight, earn more money, quit smoking or change a habit?

Are you focusing more on the obstacles of making these changes or are you focusing on the solution that will make things happen. Are you focusing on the True North or are you focusing on other directions that don’t even matter?

To make changes, one must take action. I know there are many people who choose not to take action, but if you truly want to make a difference in your life, being a spectator doesn’t get you anywhere. You can join us in the discussion area in the HMS Facebook Fan Page to cultivate new habits.

If there are any obstacles that are blocking you from taking any action or decision that will make a huge difference to your life, identify it and focus on the solution to make things happen. Don’t wait anymore if you want to make a difference in your life. Now is the best time to start.

    Hi Vincent,

Thanks for the above tips and you are right when you said what you are focusing on makes a huge difference. But as you know sometimes it is not easy at all to focus on anything positive when everything around you seems to be against you.

How do you shift your thinking subconsciously to something positive when you are in a negative patch in your life?

    Vincent,
So, so true…what you focus on expands!

And I *love* that you’re highlighting this idea. The moments of greatest success, looking back, have come on the heals of a perceived failure…and then really focusing on solutions.

Great to read this tonight…and great to be here!

      Hey Lance,

Thanks for dropping by. What we focus on expands and it isn’t it much better to focus on solutions instead of problems? 🙂

    Hi Vincent

What moves and keeps me moving is something I read:

If something doesn’t work, try something else.
If something doesn’t work, try something else.
If something doesn’t work, try something else.
If something doesn’t work, try something else.
If something doesn’t work, try something else.
If something doesn’t work, try something else.
If something doesn’t work, try something else.
If something doesn’t work, try something else.

    And then when…
If that doesn’t work, try something else.
If that doesn’t work, try something else.
If that doesn’t work, try something else.
If that doesn’t work, try something else.

Of course, planning and evaluation is important too.

    Enjoyed your post.

Nice Pic! I was actually imaging myself getting hit over the head with a giant hammer. Ouch!! Redirecting your focus to the solution is right. I know this because I’m the king of getting frustrated. Articles like these help me to always keep the solution in mind.

Obstacles form the stairs for us to climb higher and reaching more out there when we deal with it and improve ourself. 🙂
