Lifestyle Design – How Does Your Ultimate Lifestyle Looks Like?

18 Comments Posted in Lifestyle Design

Do you really have to slog for 40 – 50 years before you can enjoy the fruits of your labor? Most people have a concept that they need to work hard for at least 40 to 50 years before they can retire and enjoy their life. Is this necessary true? Is it possible that you can start enjoying your life right now instead of pushing it back?

Yes, You Can Enjoy Your Life Right Now

Most of us follow the normal route of going to middle school, high school, college and finally working in the society climbing corporate ladders. It seems like a norm to everybody because this is what most of our parents preach.

People who don’t question this status quo will keep on following this routine only be able to enjoy their life after their prime. Why not enjoy life now? Why not enjoy your life this moment instead of waiting for another 30 -40 years?

I believe Tim Ferriss is the one who makes the term Lifestyle Design popular. In his book, The 4 Hours Work Week, he teaches people to follow an unconventional route and to design their desired lifestyle. Tim Ferriss teaches people not to defer their life plan and start enjoying their life this very moment.

He is a great example to follow. By looking at what he did (leaning Spanish, taking part in martial arts competition, breakdancing in MTV, dancing tango in Argentina etc), you will be amazed by how much interesting things he did and the places he had visited.

He will go wherever he wants to go and do whatever he wants to do. He isn’t bounded by anything and he enjoys absolute freedom and lives a millionaire lifestyle even though he is not one yet.

What Is Your Desired Lifestyle?

Most people thought that it is not possible to quit their day job. They feel frustrated and angry when they can’t quit their job because they need their pay checks as much as a drug addict needs his cocaine.

Paychecks are addictive drugs in this situation.

You and I have commitments that we need to fulfill and we need our paychecks to pay for our debts, mortages, cars, study loans etc. If you increase he amount of debts you have, you will find yourself getting more addicted to your paychecks.

What if you get money out of the equation? This can help you see clearly what you really want to do, be and have in your life right now. Do you want to travel around the world and experience different cultures? Do you want to be able to work from home? Do you want to wake up energetic to run your own business instead of squeezing in public commute to face your boss?

I can’t stop thinking about the places that I want to visit when I’m writing this; Maldives, Sweden, Hawaii, Spain, Italy and the list goes on…

Life can be fun, remember?

Vincent Is It Really Possible That I Can Design My Own Lifestyle?

Yes. Definitely.

I have seen many people who are living the lifestyle that most of us want (total freedom and location independent). We should model and learn from these people.

To name a few of them

Check out their blogs. You will be inspired and maybe you can get some ideas to kick-start your journey towards designing your ultimate lifestyle. You can also check out this post written by Corbett Barr – 50 Photos To Inspire Life As A Digital Nomad. These are photos that you can’t take if you are stuck to the cubicle.

Instead of doubting that you can’t do achieve the lifestyle that you want, focus on what you can do to achieve it. Maybe you have nothing in mind right now but putting you frame of mind into seeking solutions and staying positive will help you to find the answers that you need. What you focus on expands. Focus on finding solutions will get you more solutions and focusing on problems will create more problems for you.

Questions To Ask Yourself

  1. Are you enjoying what you are doing right now?
  2. Are there any things that you wish to be doing but you are not doing yet now?
  3. Are there things that you are deferring due to constraints?

Ask yourself these questions. Find out do you really want to do what you are doing now for the next 30 to 40 years or maybe it is time for a change? A change to join the new group of people who are location independent, doing what they love and spending their time on what really matters.

    Hi Vincent,

I am well on my way to living the lifestyle I love. There are many ways to help support this lifestyle but some things work better than others.

I recommend going to this website… http://earlyretirementextreme.com… and check out what jacob has to say about living the life you want. Following his advice will certainly help you achieve your dreams faster.

After coaching for some years, I can tell you that developing a lifestyle you want is hands down one of the most important and beneficial things you can do. You can be the most awesome person ever, but if you don’t have an attractive lifestyle, you will have a harder time forming new and quality connections.

It really affects things when it comes to your dating life. You might meet this awesome girl who’s in an Ivy League school but if you’re living in your mom’s basement with no car…it’s going to be hard to create something there. It’s not impossible but it definitely makes things harder.

      Hi Niko,

What you are saying is absolutely true. An attractive lifestyle can help to attract better things into your life. The good news is that we can change our lifestyle if we want to. All it takes is serious planning and implementation.

      Thanks for dropping by!

  4. Are you enjoying what you are doing right now?

Once we answer this question with honesty and realize without happiness, we cant be happy with our lives, we then begin to grow out of honest and from this we fly away towards our field of dreams.

    • Vincent says:

      Hey Jonathan,

It takes honesty and guts to answer that question. There are people who choose to live in denial and think they are doing fine which they are not. The breakthrough will only be made when they have enough courage and honesty to see the truth.

  5. For me the hard part about “designing a lifestyle” was not the work but just taking that first step and deciding to dedicate myself 100% to it. Once I left my job, and started working for myself, the rest was relatively easy.

      Hey Anthony,

The first step is hard and it is where that most people choke. Congrats on breaking through and taking the first step towards your desired lifestyle! I visited your blog and you got pretty good articles there. Keep up the good work!

  6. I completely agree with this life plan. It’s tragic how many people of our parents’ generation dedicated their entire career to one company and who pass away too soon after retirement not being able to carry out their retirement plans. You don’t have to observe this pattern too many times to realize there has to be a better way. That was my motivation for getting involved with internet marketing.

      Hi Jennifer,

It is the first time seeing you here. Thanks for dropping by!

Internet marketing is something that I have been doing. It is something that can help us to create an income online and help us achieve the lifestyle full of freedom.

Keep working hard on it. It would be great to hear about your progress.

Hey.. Long time no see.. Yes! The book is very inspiring, Vincent, let us know what you can do to make your lifestyle come true. I am right now in Tokyo. The more I am living here, the more I can feel what culture really is. It is defination of right and wrong. Sometimes, I am wondering, whether Tim’s mindset in the limit of his own culture. And how can people from all the world make his mindset into effects.

The people I had mentioned in the blog article had achieved what Tim had mentioned in the book. The nomadic lifestyle that they can live if they want to. I think it is something that can be accomplished but right now I am focusing on achieving my goals for 2010.

Look out for my goals on 2011. I think I have one in mind and it is definitely something about creating my desired lifestyle.

I like the idea of living life on my own terms, which has been the main reason why I did not return to my former job in banking after the birth of my two children. I think it is wonderful that you espouse about designing your own lifestyle. It is important to put in some conscious thinking about how we would like to spend our days.

I recently read up on some wonderful people who have achieved a lifestyle of their dream. I wonder why not and I think it is definitely something that all of us should spend some time thinking about it.

  9. Diggy says:

    Hey Vincent!

Good to have a post from you again!
Yeah it is indeed possible to create your own income online and live the nomadic lifestyle, but don’t expect it to happen overnight. It takes weeks, months and even years of hard work and effort, but if you do your research and study successful people, then the chances are that you can build up something very decent in not too much time.

And then it is just a matter of keeping on learning, working and doing.

Hey Diggy! Thanks for dropping by.

It does takes time to create a full time income online and live a nomadic lifestyle. This something that I really want to achieve. It may be one of my main goals for next year and I’m kind of excited about it actually haha.

  10. Zen Casanova says:

    Very nice post.

I have thought about the same questions as you have. Tim’s book was really inspiring and made me see things differently.

I currently see that I either must do something I absolutely love and enjoy (so it doesn’t matter how much I work because work is the same thing I would do anyway) or I get as much money as possible in little time and use the rest of the time to do what I really want.

Time will show how it goes.

I hope you will find your dreams, I believe they are closer than you think.

I truly believe in doing something that we are passionate in. I find it hard to motivate myself to keep on doing something that I have little passion in. If there is no motivation to do something, I believe the end results will be mediocrity.
